Today my best friend is having a birthday party. She has invited me and my boyfriend Sean to it. We both came on time, dressed fancy and carrying some alcohol. She opens the door, beaming, and we both congratulate her on "reaching the mid-life crisis age", as Sean said. There are already some people there and I know that nobody else is coming - she has a lot of friends, but would never invite them to this kind of event.
Sean and I sit down onto the sofa, talking about the decorations. His hand rests on mine, almost grasping it in nervousness.
"Are you alright?" i ask, concerned.
"Well..." he hesitates. "I don't know all the people here, so I'm kinda nervous something can go wrong."
"I don't know many people either," I try to laugh it off, "so if we fail, we fail together."
Sean giggles. Finally, the birthday girl comes, turns on the stereo and you rock out to some pop song you've never heard before. Even Sean-the-heavy-metal-fan jumps and flips his green hair back and forth.
Sean goes off to bring some drinks from the stand. Rows upon rows of those red cups you see in movies stand on the table with bottles circling them. I try to enjoy the music for a while.
Suddenly, the music goes quiet, and the lights go out. I hear some girls scream but supress the urge to scream myself.
"Sean!" I call out, turning my head hoping to see him.
"I'm coming!" he calls out from across the room.
I panic. This isn't normal. But the dark isn't scary. Everyone is here. No scary things. No killers. Just NORMAL FUCKING PEOPLE. They shout, searching for the switch to turn the electricity back on.
I am afraid of the dark. And this is not a good situation for that fear.
"SEAN!" I scream, flailing your arms around, trying to catch someone. I knock a cup off the table and cut your hand. I grasp someone's shirt and they come closer, hugging me.
The lights turn back on. The music comes back on, too. I open your eyes to see that the person hugging me is Sean. He giggles and says:
"Hey there, racoon."
I immediately understand why he said that, wipe mascara off a bit, and laugh too. We both move closer and kiss among the applauding people.
Being scared of the dark isn't that bad, huh?
