Kai paused for a second, seemingly contemplating his next few words.
"Okay. Look. You guys have nothing, yet you deserve everything! I want -need- you to agree to let me help you, please." He begged.
Kai had never begged anyone to do anything before; ever. It just wasn't his style. And yet here he was, begging my mom and I to let him help us.
I looked up at him, " Kai..." I began but he cut me off.
"No, Calla. I have enough money to last me at least three lifetimes, and I don't even need it or want it." He looked at my mom who was currently looking extremely confused, "With your permission, I would like to re-decorate your house, get your heating, electricity and everything else sorted becuase it kills me inside when I go home to know that whilst I'm sat in the warmth, two beautiful ladies are sleeping on matresses in a cold, empty house."
I swallowed, slipping from his hold and walking back into the house; Gently shutting the door behind me. Kai shouldn't have to help us, he had his own issues to worry about. However, I wasn't going to argue with him, not after what happened last time. If I was being honest, the idea of coming home to a warm house filled with furniture and finally being able to call it home filled me with hope. Hope of a future, hope for my mom, hope for my relationship with Kai, hope for finally being able to let go of the past.
As I walked towards my room, I could hear my mom and Kai talking quietly outside through the paper-thin walls. The fact that he was so willing to give up his money just to make us comfortable made me realise why I was so in love with him. The guy was selfless. Deep down, underneath the entire badass exterior was a loving, gentle boy that just wanted to help.
A few minutes later, the muffled discussion stopped and I could hear footsteps climbing the stairs and heading towards me. I sat up, expecting it to be Kai but was surprised when my moms head peeked around the doorway.
I smiled at her weakly, "Hey, mom. Where's Kai?"
She smiled back, although hers seemed genuine, as she walked towards me and sat down next to me.
"He went home, he thought we might like to talk about the whole idea. He told me to tell you that he really enjoyed today and that he was really glad that you went with him."
I smiled again, a happier one this time as I thought back to just a couple of hours ago when I had met Reed, Hugo, Tris and the rest of his friends.
My mom looked at me and sighed gently, " I honestly think he wants to help us, Calla. Maybe we should let him. I mean look at us" she gestured around the room at the peeling walls, cracked windows, the missing curtains and everything else, "It isn't healthy. He wants to help."
I thought about it for a while, sitting in silence before I nodded.
"Okay."
I sighed as mom's frail arms wrapped around my body, her head leaning on top of my own.
"I think it's time we stopped shutting those that want to help out, don't you?"
I did.

The next day, I was almost happy to go to school. Maybe it's because I'm finally allowing myself to accept help, maybe it's just because I get to see Kai. I'm not entirely sure.
I walked across the parking lot to the willow tree, where I sat down and waited for Kai to turn up.
I heard him before I saw him, his motorbike's engine sending a loud roar through the air. He looked good today, his black skinny jeans, his tan timberland boots, a white t-shirt and a hoodie... yum.
I watched as he parked his bike and climbed off it effortlessly before his gaze swept across his surroundings and landed on me. I smiled. Apparently he was waiting for some kind of clue as to whether or not I was mad at him before he came near me because as soon as I smiled he grinned and strode towards me.
"So, did you make a decision yet?"
That's what he asked me the minute he sat down. Typical.
I let out a laugh, picking at the grass infront of me as I nodded.
"Mhmm."
He groaned before he playfully knocked his shoulder against mine,
"That doesn't fully answer my question and you know it, Calla."
I couldn't help the grin that formed on my face as I looked at him, meeting his green eyes with my own.
"Yes, Kai, it would be amazing if you would help us."
A look of surprise flittered across his face before he grinned boyishly, reaching over to grab me and crush me into a hug. His strong arms wrapped around me like a vice, trapping me against his chest. I didn't mind the view, but I was beginning to find it hard to breathe.
"Kai. Cant. Breathe." I gasped.
Apparently he found it funny as he pulled me impossibly closer for a second or two before letting go. I scowled as he looked down at me, laughing.
"Shut. Up."
He rolled his eyes before his head bent and he placed a kiss on my forehead before standing up and taking me with him.
"Right, little miss grumpy, I hate to break it to you, but it's time for homeroom. Unlike you, I actually care about my grades." His last sentence was meant to wind me up, obviously, and it worked as my mouth dropped open.
"You? Caring about your grades? Holy crap Kai, did hell finally freeze over?"
He turned to look at me, feigning a look of hurt before he playfully glared at me.
"I can still kill you, you know."
I shook my head, matching his now full blown grin with my own,
"No. You can't."
He shook his head and his eyes dropped to the ground momentarily before he looked up and met my gaze once again.
"You're right. I couldn't hurt the girl I loved, ever, let alone kill her."
