When Lucky woke up, he looked like trash, and frankly, he still did.
His disheveled hair had refused to cooperate and his tired eyes were sporting fancy new bags. He smoothed out his gray shirt, cursing under his breath as he noticed the coffee stain on his blazer. "Shit." He groaned quietly, before smiling sheepishly and pushing open the doors to his office. "Mr. Maddox, I'm glad you could make it. You're late for a very important conference. I'm sure they'll be ecstatic to hear your excuse this time. I, on the other hand, am not. Get your ass down there." I nodded silently, swallowing hard. "Yes sir."
I turned back from his glare and rushed, quite ungracefully, to the elevators, sliding in just before the doors slid shut. "Latte?" Myers, held out the small cup to Lucky who quickly declined the intern's offer before aggressively hitting the third floor button. "Ooh, third floor's that super important meeting thing." Myers shot a very frantic Lucky a sympathetic glance before the doors slid open. "Good luck bro." Lucky waved quickly at the freckled boy before he stumbled through the doors of the meeting room. A dozen pairs of eyes landed on him at once, making him gulp. "Mr. Maddox."
Lucky stood there awkwardly as a tall man, East, as people called him stood up, walking over. East had been his boss for the past few years, setting up his training, schooling, and living arrangements, and making sure he didn't get himself into trouble, which didn't always work. Much like today, when he stood in the middle of the most important meeting of the year receiving the most terrifying glare in the world, from the scariest man he had ever met. "East." East's glare hardened,"It's Mr. Smith to you boy, and you better have a great damn explanation for why you weren't here half an hour ago." Lucky gulped, East never made anyone call him anything but East unless they were in deep, and Lucky was buried.
"Car problems sir," East narrowed his eyes before stepping back waving his hand back to reveal an empty seat. "We'll talk about this later. Sit down. Now." Lucky did as he was told sitting down right next to East. "Please, continue Ms. Jackson.'' A petite woman stood patiently in front of the crowd, eyes fixated on Lucky as if he were prey. She nodded at East before pulling a file from under her arm and opening it, shuffling papers around before she pulled out a small image. She held it up, revealing a picture of an abandoned warehouse. "The suspect this case focuses on was last seen alive in this abandoned warehouse in Sioux Falls South Dakota on December fifteenth 2010. WILD had reasons to believe that he was dead, his blood was found in large amounts in the building, enough to imply that he had bled out. The victims family was told about his death after the investigation was over which was roughly six months after the incident had taken place. The case was kept confidential, and the victims family was not allowed to know exact details and they remained off the grid."
The woman returned the photograph to the file before fishing out a letter of some sort. "The victim on the other hand did not." Lucky leaned back in his seat, suddenly interested in what was happening. "This letter is from the FBI who had a few agents in on the case. This states that the victim was found alive in Times Square New York, they were unable to approach him, because by the time they arrived, there was no him left. He fled." She quickly placed the letter back into the file before tucking the whole thing back under her arm. "This information leads us to believe that he is in danger or some kind of legal trouble. This is a highly confidential case and I am not authorized to share any other information until I know that your agency has agreed to put all past conflict behind you and work with WILD."
The room remained silent, waiting for East, the most powerful man in the room to respond. He exhaled slowly through his breath. "Well, Ms. Jackson. Since this case could possibly unify our agencies, I don't see why not. I'll have an agent assigned to you by the end of the day." With that he pulled a cigar from his coat pocket, sticking it between his lips before, gesturing for Lucky to get up and follow. He did as he was told and followed him out of the now murmur filled room and out into the elevator. The doors slid closed and he pressed the button before pulling the cigar from between his teeth and sighing heavily, looking Lucky in the eyes. "Lucky," He looked down before glancing momentarily at the boy. "You are a smart boy, a good fighter too. I should know, I've seen you put guys twice your size on operating tables. But, I can't keep treating you like an adult if you don't act like one. I know your stressed out about what happened with your mum, I get that, but you can't bring it here because if you do you'll be dead before the weeks out. So the late days have to stop, you need to get it together. I have somethin' big planned for you and I need to know that I can rely on you to get it done." Lucky nodded, fully understanding, pushing the thought of his mom out of his head.
"Attaboy." Lucky nodded scratching the back of his head. "Sorry East." East had been Lucky's father figure for the past five years and it kinda sucked when he was disappointed in him, especially when it embarrassed him too. It kinda sucked a lot. The doors slid open and Lucky once again, stood in the middle of his office. He sighed heavily, flopping down into his spinning chair, glancing expectantly at East. "So do you know who you're choosing for the case?" East eyed his cigar that he had put on the desk. "I promised my wife I would quit you know, a lot easier said than done." Lucky nodded a slight chuckle bubbling past his lips as he watched East take a seat. "Anyways, I already sent her the file via e-mail. Yours." Lucky's head shot up, searching East's eyes for the usual glint of humor. "Are you serious?" East, leaned back into the wooden chair tiredly, watching Lucky grimly.
"Your dad was a good man," Lucky raised an eyebrow at his bluntness. "What's this got to do with my dad?" East ran a hand across his face, "The victim Ms. Jackson spoke of was your father. I'm sending you in because if he'll listen to anyone, it'll be his boy." Lucky nearly choked on air as East spoke. "The police told me that my father was dead. Killed in a car crash"
"No, they told you what they thought would keep you and your mum safe." Lucky scowled, anger slowly filling him. "Look how good that worked out." East watched sympathetically as Lucky ran a hand through his tousled white hair. "I understand you're upset, and probably want answers. I did this on a hunch that that man would talk to you and give you them and that you would cooperate. Don't make me regret it." Lucky clenched his teeth, running his hand across his jaw. "Go pack your things, I'll be driving you to WILD tonight so be ready. And watch your attitude with your mom, she's trying." Lucky scoffed, ignoring the pointed look East shot him. "I mean it." Lucky stood from his seat sliding his blazer off of his shoulders as he walked out the door. "No promises."
East groaned. "Be decent at least, Arabella Jackson will be joining us on our trip there." East smirked, remembering the woman from the conference room. "Will do." He ran his hands through his hair one last time before pushing the door open and stepping outside.
