"Why do you have to leave?" My best friend, Sylvia, whined from where my bed used to sit. "Did someone threaten you or something? Because I can fix that."
I turned towards her and chuckled. Sylvia has always been more of a talker than a shower, but this time, I couldn't tell which one she was.
"No, no one threatened me. I just decided I wanted a change of scenery. Nothing to worry about, I promise." I grabbed my friends fragile shoulders and looked her in the eyes. I've always loved how the color of her eyes told her mood. At that moment, they were green, sadness. "I'll come to visit on holidays and during the summer when I can. This isn't the end of us." With that I gave her a weak half smile and she hugged me in one of her famous Sylvia bear hugs.
"And birthdays," she mumbled into my shoulder and I laughed again. She was always so persistent, it's why I love her so much.
At the airport, I got another Sylvia bear hug then I was off to my gate. My heels clicked on the hard floor and it made me happy to finally be free of the small town I've called home all my life. I found the counter with a woman dressed in flight terminal attire.
"Excuse me, where is the gate to New York City?" I asked, excitement making my voice rise and octave or two.
The woman looked up with a smile, "It's just two gates down, sweetie. Have a nice flight." I mumbled a 'thank you' and basically ran to my gate; I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
I found the gate and I was greeted by a ticket hostess. "Are you boarding the New York City plane?" I nodded with excitement and handed her my ticket. With a smile and an open had, I was welcomed on to the plane.
This is it, Charlotte . I thought. We're finally leaving this hell hole for a real life. You better not mess this up. With that, the plane's engines started and the plane lifted off the ground, heading straight for the new life that awaited me in New York City, New York.
