Chapter 9. Regret

Kirito ended up explaining the different types of guilds. My mind was on pause, just spacing out into the window as Silica payed close attention to Kirito, who didn't really focus on me at all. It didn't bug me though. My mind drifted off somewhere, until a beep was heard, interrupting my deep thoughts

I opened my menu and found out that I had received a new message from Miki. As my eyes scanned the message, my heart started beating faster and faster. I could feel sweat forming on my skin as my eyes widen.

New message from: Miki

Subject: None

'Emiko, please come out here right now! There is some shady looking guy that looks oddly familiar, and I need some help! Please, I'm terrified! I need backup! Come before he spots me! But, I've seen this guy before! I'm sure you'd be the one to mostly recognize this man. He's killing and murdering people in a very familiar style, and I'm scared! I want to fight him, but I'm too scared! It's chaotic over here! Please help! Meat me at the town of beginnings, ASAP! Please hurry!!!'

Kirito's POV

I finished explaining about the different types of guilds to Silica, and all of the sudden, she stood up and held my hands, taking me by surprised.

"That's awful! But don't worry, I'll try my best!" Silica said with a determined look. I look to my side to check on Emiko, and what I saw concerned me.

Emiko was reading a message with worried eyes with a bit of fear. She was slightly shaking and was having a cold sweat. I broke free of Silica's grasp kindly and reached for Emiko's shoulder as she scanned the message. She flinched at my touch and looked at me, quickly exiting the message. I gave her a worried stare

"Are you ok?" I asked. Emiko shut her eyes shut for a moment, before shooting up. "Emiko-chan?" I stood up as well, along with Silica

"It's nothing, but I have to go. Kirito, I trust you with Silica." She said, before turning away.

Emiko's POV

I turned away from Kirito, but he grabbed my wrist, making Silica flinch

"It's too dangerous to go alone. I'll come with you." Kirito said

"You're not involved. Let me do this on my own, please" I said

"Then let me help" Kirito said. What the heck does THAT mean? Does he just not respect that I can actually DO a mission without him? Wow, jerk.

I snatched my arm away from him and turned to his direction, glaring at him

"Do you ALWAYS have to be following me wherever I go? Is it because you don't trust me? Is it because you think that I can be responsible for myself to even protect myself? Or is because-" Kirito cut me off

"It's because I'm worried about you." Kirito said softly, yet carefully, as if if he were to speak any louder, he would scare me, or break me.

"Oh? So it IS because you think I'm not capable of protecting myself!" I snapped.

"No, that's not it. It's because I care about you, and I don't want to risk you getting hurt at all. I won't take any chances." Kirito said with the same tone, his hair covering his face.

My expression softened when I saw his hurt eyes hidden beneath his hair. I looked around, noticing everyone, even the NPC's staring at us. I turned around from him, covering my shame with an angry look.

"I don't need you to CARE about me. I'm able to handle myself. So, leave me be." I said, walking away from him, leaving him in pain.

Regret was all that washed over me. Why did I just snap at him like that? What's with me? I shouldn't have done that. I don't know anymore. I just need to save Miki, and quick.

Wait for me, Miki . . .
