The warning was clear; I had to run, but I wasn't going to leave my mother behind. I ran out to the bannister of the staircase and looked down. A shadow gloomed over her features and a hand constricted her throat, choking her. A silent screem made its way to my lips but I held it back. I couldn't see the attacker but I knew it was a man. And whoever he was, he didn't look like he was coming to wish me a belated birthday.
I snapped my head around to look for something to use as a weapon."Margaret, how lovely to see you again." He spoke to my mom like you would to an old friend but voice made the hairs in my arms stand up and I frantically searched harder, trying not to give away my position.
"Is that her upstairs? Desperately trying to find a means to save you?" He sounded amused and my skin crawled, he knew that I was here and what I was doing."You cannot touch her now, she is binded with the sacred oath." My mother all but spat the words out.
"How sweet, but you forget my motives, am I not the same creature who saw through your husbands binding?" I gasped. "I can still find her, oath or not, and she will be mine."
I heard a sickening crack followed by a loud thump. My stomach lurched as I realised what had happened. She's gone. My mother was gone."Dear Anastasia, how have you been? Its been ages since I last saw you, so cruel of your mother to hide from me what is naturally mine." He spoke up to me and I scrambled through the passage cupboard as I heard the stairs creek. My breath came in pants and I wanted to cry when I finally found my old baseball bat; Both from relief and sadness that I had it to protect myself and that I had found it too late.
"Anastasia, my sweet love, come to me now." His voice sounded closer, my breathing contorting accordingly. I steadied myself, trying to remember all I had learnt from my self defense classes but something told me it wouldn't help me here.
Turning around I got a glimpse of a tall, bulky man. Unearthly was the first word that came to mind. It didn't make sense but I knew he wasn't human; the features suggested otherwise. He had a dirty blonde hair that touched his shoulders and a tatoo covering the entire surface of chest that was open to see. Simbols and engravings in the skin, he looked human but his presence was not. It made my skin itch and my senses scream to run. Almost like a bad dream where you know what is going on. Only I didn't.
"Look how ravishing you look." Disgust travelled through me. But the adrenaline travelled faster.
"Stay away from me!" My voice sounded sure, for that I was grateful.
"You don't mean that." He tilted his head to look at me, his eyes trailed down towards my ring.
"So its true, you now wear the product of your oath."
He sounded amused."What oath?" Do not negotiate with terrorists my mind kept saying but I needed to know.
"I should have known she wouldn't tell you. Probably thought your own naivety would keep you safe. How wrong was she eh?" He gave me a pitiful look.
"Now come with me. You will become my own and you will be safe." Ew.Become his own? I don't think so.
"Never." I raised my bat and prepared to swing. Only to have it whipped out of my grip and straight into his hand. It was as if he had drawn it to him...
"What are you?" He laughed deeply, it was a sick and evil sound.
"Your worste nightmare. My name is Alistair."
