Justin’s POV
“Yes, but did you say anything else to her? Not even a hug or something?” Dr. Amalia Fairchild said, looking through her glasses and over to me on the opposite couch.
“No, of course I didn’t hug her, are you crazy? The day was supposed to be about Jayden!” I replied, already angry with her for somehow being right about everything, even when she doesn’t try.
“But she is Jayden’s mother. And your wife! How can you go so long without having a full conversation with your wife?”
“It’s complicated!” I muttered.
“Justin, you’ve been coming to these therapy sessions for months. I know it’s complicated.” Dr. Amalia responded.
“I did some really awful things to Blake and my family. She probably doesn’t want to talk to me.”
“Have you tried?” Dr. Amalia asked, knowing that she had made some small break through.
“No, I haven’t.” I answered with a sigh.
“Well there you go! How about this week, when you pick Jayden up, make a conscious effort to try and talk to Blake. I’m not saying you two have to work out all of your issues in one sitting, I’m just saying that maybe you should start slow.”
“Like asking her how her week was?” I suggested.
“Exactly. You have to start somewhere. And she is probably too scared to try, considering you left her.”
“I know, I know I left her. I left Jayden too.” I mumbled, more to myself. But of course she heard; she heard everything.
“Justin, you never want to talk about that. Why did you leave them?” Dr. Amalia asked slowly.
“Am I a coward if I say I don’t know?” I asked.
“Yes. Tell me how you really feel.” Dr. Amalia replied.
“I thought leaving, letting them figure things out, was easier for them. I honestly thought and still think that they are better off without me. Blake needs to mourn the death of her sister without me and Jayden needs at least one parent who does the right thing. I didn’t, so I left.”
“How do you know if you’re right though? Why didn’t you ask Blake what she wanted?”
“She was so mad at me, of course she would have told me to leave.” I responded.
“Maybe she would have made you sleep on the couch for a few nights. She wouldn’t have wanted you to leave for 6 months.” Dr. Amalia replied.
“She needed time to mourn her sister.” I replied strongly.
“Justin, she didn’t know her sister! She needed time to mourn the idea that you were cheating on her, not the death of her sister that she didn’t know.”
“No, Blake needed to mourn her. Even if she didn’t know her, she was her sister. Blake has lost too much family already.” I said.
“And you thought Blake thinking you were cheating was less painful than knowing her sister was dying of cancer?” Dr. Amalia asked.
“Yes. I knew it was. Or at least I thought.” I said, trailing off.
“Justin, Blake loves you. I’ve never even met her and I know that she loves you more than anything, other than Jayden. You and Jayden are her life. The idea that you were cheating on her probably hurt more than any family member having cancer.”
