Chapter 3

After we got my schedule, Shane showed me around a bit. He showed me where all my classes are, the commons, the gym, and where all the restrooms are. When he was done showing me the whole school we had to go our separate ways.

Now I am here in English trying to finish my essay as my stomach growls, gnawing at it, begging for food.

I look at the clock. Two more minutes left.

I try to finish a few more sentences. And that is why—

“Alright class, put down your pencils and have a wonderful lunch.” Ms. Harp said as smiling.

At that moment, I ran out of the classroom and started walking towards Shane and his locker. Before I could get to him, a girl blocked my path.

“Where are ya goin, new girl?” She asked with a smug look on her face.

“Um… excuse me.” I said as polite as I could, while trying to somehow move around her.

“Whoa, I just asked you a question and when I ask you a question,” She said as backing me into the wall. “What do you do?”

“Um…” I was too scared to answer. After a while a crowed started to form.

“See there you go again!” She yelled as hitting me. Then all of a sudden her friends started to join in. I of the hitting and smacking was too much for me, that I fell to the ground.

“This is what you get for not answering me.” Before she could kick me, a boy stepped out of the crowed.

            “Zora stop hurting her!”

Zora turned around with a fake smile on her face. “Yes, Colby Carrot?”

“Don’t call me that ok? We are not dating anymore.” He knitted his eye brows together as he said this.

            “I know, but—“

“Just go eat your crap, Zora for all I care!” He yelled.

Zora looked at Colby, shocked. Then her face hardened and she and her gang left to the lunch room.

Colby’s face dropped to the floor. Then looks at me as if he just realized I was still perched against the wall, but then smiles.

He walks up to me and kneels down. “Are you ok?” he asks gently.

I nod my head. “I think so.” I said as trying to get up, but as I do pain goes through me and I wince.

“Wait, let me help.” As he helps me up I accidently trip and tumble on to him. We both groan.

“I am so sorry.” I said bashfully.

“It’s okay.” As he said that he brushed some of my hair behind my ear and looks into my eyes. He has such beautiful, big, green eyes. His hair looked so soft and sandy that I had to restrain myself from curling my fingers into them. I look at his skin, a perfect tan and his smile-- I clear my throat and I roll off him. As I roll off him, I wince, but this time it felt more painful.

“We need to get you to the office.” He said worryingly.

“No, I’m fine.” I said as trying to act fine.

“No, you’re not. You’re obviously in pain.” I turned my head around, ready to snap at him, but then I looked into his eyes. They are full of worry, pain, and sorrow.

“Fine. Just for an ice pack.”

“I think it needs more than an ice pack.” He said with a smirk.

I smile as he helps me up a second time and this time I didn’t fall on him again. But this time I fall to the ground as a sharp gasp escapes my mouth. Colby looks at me sadly. Then he kneels down and picks me up bridle style. I lay my head against chest and I feel his heart beat so fast I was worried it might jump out of his ribcage. I smile as we go down the ramp on our way to the office.
