"what do you mean they're dropping the case?" Troye asked his mother, anger evident in his facial features and voice.
It had only been two and a half months since Connors disappearance and the police, who probably couldn't give two shits about their job, only found three things since he vanished:
- he was last seen around 10:30 in his room by his mother.
- Connor's last post on social media was a picture of a late night coffee that was posted at 12:15AM with the caption "last one."
- Connor was last with Troye.
Troye remember when the police had questioned him, thinking that Troye would be the suspect;
"can we chat with your son, Mr.Mellet?" officer Dawson had asked, making his way into the Mellet family home. Shaun agreed and ushered the officer to the kitchen table where Troye sat. It was March 18th and Troye had just heard of the news only hours before. Now he was being confronted by officers.
"Troye, My name is Officer Dawson, as you know." He started. Troye just nodded, not daring to look at the officer in the eyes. Troye was a mess. His eyes were puffy and his cheeks were tear stained. Connor, his best friend, his crush, is missing and they don't seem to care that Troye is in no condition to be questioned. "I understand Connor was your best friend, correct."
Troye nodded. "Connor is my best friend" He correct the tense of the officers question, not liking the way he said 'was.'
"Where were you on the night of March 17th, Troye?"
"I was with Connor. He took me to the sunflower field just past the old chapel in town. I dropped him off at home around 9." Troye stated, trying to remember the timing of everything.
"And did Connor get into the house safely?" Officer Dawson asked.
"Yes. I don't leave the driveway until I know he's made it inside. I always check" Troye stated, pulling at his curls.
"How would you describe Connor?" Officer Dawson was writing down everything Troye was saying.
"He's unique, very unique. He's also reserved and tends to bottle up his emotions regularly. I've never had a deep conversation with him that was about him. They were always about me and he would help me with so many issues. He was the first person I came out to." Troye explained, wiping the stray tears that have began falling down his cheeks.
"Does Connor have a girlfriend?"
"No, although girls are after him." Troye chuckled. He had always found it weird that, although Connor was not popular by all means, girls were chasing him left and right, because, let's be honest, he's insanely gorgeous.
Officer Dawson just sat there, looking at Troye right in the eye before asking the final question;
"So you had nothing to do with the disappearance of Connor?" Whoop there it is. Troye just sat there in shock.
"Does it look like i had something to do with the disappearance of my best friend? I wouldn't dare to hurt him." Troye stated. "You can check my house, do a full investigation on me, anything. But you won't find anything because I did not kidnap Connor" Troye said convincingly.
"Thank you, Troye, that's all the information we needed.
Today was Troyes 18th birthday. He had been hoping that maybe, just maybe, Connor would show up. That Connor was going to show up at his doorstep and wish his best friend a happy birthday.
but instead, he received news that the police were dropping his case. Probably never to open the case file again. And that made no sense to Troye. It's only been a few weeks and they're already stopping it.
"usually, if someone were kidnapped, they have at least 48 hours of survival. And after that, it's a matter of finding their body" was what the police chief had to say.
Troye was furious. Everybody in the damn county just listened to the chief and assumed Connor was probably dead in some basement somewhere.
But Troye refused to believe anything the police chief had to say. He was probably saying this so people wouldn't get mad that they're just too lazy to take on a big case like this.
The county is very small. Nothing happens here. The biggest problem this county had to face was somebody stealing Mrs.Melondys lettuce from her garden. Turns out, it was just a rabbit.
Now the county was faced with a missing persons case. And they decide to drop it? What the actual hell?
"They're dropping Connors case, Tro. He's most likely.... Well"
"Don't say it" Troye interrupted. "Connor isn't dead. I refuse to believe he's dead until I see him with my own eyes" Troye was a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, but Troye had trouble figuring out what this reason was. What was the reason that would cause Connor to disappear?
"Troye, I see those gears turning in your brain" Laurelle stated. "Please promise me you won't get involved with this case. I know you like detective work and what not, but what's done is done and you can't do anything about it"
"Mum, I can't promise you anything" Troye replied, sternly. "I can't promise you I won't get involved. Because I will and I am."
"Troye..."
"Mum, Connor is my best friend. I want to know what happened to him. I need to know"
"And so does his family, but you don't see them getting involved!" Laurelle fought back, trying to get her son to see how ridiculous he was being. "Troye, you'll just upset yourself by doing this! Connor is dead, you're not going to find him!"
"Watch me!" Troye yelled back, fighting the tears. He hated when people said that. Troye knew Connor wasn't dead, he just knew. There is no way that Connor could be dead, Troye refused to believe it.
Because maybe, just maybe, if Connor really was kidnapped, they would've saved him. God knows what for, but that's a possibility, right?
Yes, the police couldn't give two shits about Connor. Yes, Troye's family has tried to get Troye to move on. Yes, Troye's friends have tried to pull him out of his room to stop thinking about Connor. Yes, almost everyone in the town has forgotten about the case or accepted the fact that Connor was probably laying in a ditch on the side of the road.
But not everybody.
Because Troye knew that Connor was still out there, and he was going to be the one to find him.
