Chapter 4 - Something's Fishy...

"Um... no.  We CAN NOT be fish.  Oh, my God.  Reece, how will we walk again?  How will we even get out of the water to... I don't know, go to the bathroom?"

"Maya, calm down.  I'm sure it's just a filthy joke someone played on us.  I bet it will blow over as soon as we get out the water here."

"Um... okay, it's worth a try," Maya says, trying to be optimistic a few minutes after the big news.

Trying to raise the new extention of her legs over the edge of the pool, Maya manages to flop down on her face.

"Ow."

"Oh, Maya..." Reece laughs.

"Shut up.  Now help me get this stupid fin out of this stupid water."

"Okay, okay," Reece says, helping her out.

"Finally!  I'm out.  Now when will it go away?"

"What do I look like, some type of mermaid expert?  Now, help me out so mine might go away, too!"

"You know," Maya says, pulling him out of the pool, "This is all your fault, right?  I mean, what if I have to quit swim team because of you and your stupid pool?  This royally sucks."

"Maya!  It's not my fault that you let yourself get drug out by some drunk!  Sorry for saving you, but I'm in the same boat as you!"

"You know, I wish I never even came here to Australia!  I bet all the people with their cute accents are stuck up and arrogant, just like you!" Maya screamed.

"Maya-"

"Just leave me alone, Reece."

"Look, Maya.  I don't want to be here, with a fin, anymore than you do.  But... now that we both are... er... stuck in this boat, we need to stick together," Reece says, standing up.

"Reece!  Your... tail!  It's... it's gone!  You have feet again!"

"Maya, so do you!  Stand up!"

"So... Are they gone for good?"

"Again, I'm not a mermaid expert, but it looks like it.  Now, I think I'm going to go home and take a hot shower and try to forget this thing ever happened."

"Sounds good to me!"

At home, Maya turned the shower on the hottest setting.  Testing the warmth with her hand, she started pulling off her clothes to hop in - it was perfect temperature.  Suddenly, she lost her balance and fell, hard, on the linolleaum floor.

"Ow.... what the fudge just happened?"

Looking down, Maya saw it... again.  Her fin was back, but now Maya decided to actually look at it closely and see what it looked like.  She saw it was sky blue, and that it was, well, scaley.  The light bounced off each little scale, making it look like it shimmered.  When she turned it side to side or up and down, it not only shimmered but also sparkled... like the kind of sparkles little girls like to throw all over their parents.  Glancing up in the mirror, Maya saw that not only her tail was bright sky blue, but her eyes had changed to that color as well.  Her mousy brown hair was still the same, although it now also seemed to shimmer and glimmer.

And as long as I got my suit and tie

I'ma leave it all on the floor tonight

And you got fixed up to the nines

Let me show you a few things

All pressed up in black and white

And you're dressed in that dress I like

Love is swinging in the air tonight

Let me show you a few things

Let me show you a few things

Show you a few things about love

Now we're in the swing of love

Let me show you a few things

Show you a few things about love

Hey

Maya's phone started ringing, playing Suit and Tie by Justin Timberlake.  Great, she thought, Perfect timing.  In one large, push and reach she grabbed it off the counter and pressed answer before plopping down on the floor.

"Hello?" Maya asks, rubbing her head where she fell.

"Maya?"

"Who is this?  Is it Reece?"

"Yep," Reece says, popping the 'p'.

"Good, just who I needed to talk to... you know earlier today, when you know, we thought it went away..."

"It didn't," they say in unison.

"Let me guess," Reece starts, "You are sprawled out on your bathroom floor right now, in nothing but a bikini top and a - "

"Reece!  Are you mad?  The cell phone companies record every conversation!  We can't just talk about this whenever we feel like it.  We have to make sure we're alone!  And... yes, yes I am," Maya says, blushing.

"You're blushing, aren't you?"

"No!"

"Mmhm.  Meet me at the pool tomorrow at noon.  Hopefully it will be empty, and if not we can go for a little... swim," And with that, Reece hung up the phone.

A/N: Sorry for such a short chapter!  I wanted to introduce Maya's reactions and how the two of them are going to have to be more secretive.  I also wanted to describe how Maya's tail looks and effects her appearance.  This chapter is dedicated to xoxokoosie for the AWESOME book cover, which I unfortunately am having some trouble putting in, but it will be in soon!  Also, sorry for the late update - I am trying out for cheerleading in high school, and I've been busy every night with practices.  Tryouts are tomorrow, Thursday!  Wish me luck.  The only way I am able to update is because it's summer!  But I have to go practice now, so ciao!  And go fan xoxokoosie!
