The hard and cold ground underneath me.

The darkness of the night slightly toned down by the light of the street lamps.

Why am I still alive?

I should be dead...

All my muscles are numb and I feel sore everywhere, I don't dare moving, being afraid of the pain or of some fracture getting worse.

My throat burns for how much I've shouted and I don't know how much of my voice is left to ask for help, hoping to be heard... but all this pain and suffering are too much, I'm a lifeless wreck, why call for help... but the survival instinct kicks in, so I start calling desperately for help.

After some minutes my remaining strength decreases bit by bit and my vision becomes blurry... when I'm about to lose any hope I catch a glimpse of a figure approaching and bending over me.

I don't who he/she is and what he/she wants, by then come what may...

I fall into unconsciousness just when I feel my body being lifted up.

-Serj-
I'm used to often have a walk, but sometimes I feel the strange desire to walk in half-unknown streets and places, maybe to escape the gazes of people who recognize me or maybe to be on my own better, and this evening is one of those rare times.

Before going out, leaving Shavo and John chatting on the sofa and zapping through TV channels and Daron playing guitar in his own room, I've got a foreboding that I can't qualify as good or bad and makes me feel worried, and the walk has not chased away this feeling. I almost pray for something to happen, 'cause I feel so nervous and I don't like it...

I suddenly hear a soft wail coming from that web of streets, from the nearby; it gets my attention, so I start searching for the source of the sound that, in the meanwhile, repeats itself but becomes weaker and weaker; my research ends after a few minutes.

There's a crouched figure lying there on the ground with dirty and messy clothes and wounds... a girl.

I approach and bend over her, trying to understand if she needs a hospital, but then I decide to take her home for tonight, there she'll be safe and will regain the consciousness that she has lost right now, lifting her up in my arms. I don't care what will happen, I couldn't leave her there, I have to do what I can.

«Serj, why the hell did you take someone home to-» Daron says just when I'm at the door, but he doesn't finish his sentence because I glare at him.

«Shit! Who is she? What happened to her?» an alarmed Shavo approaches and looks at the "bundle" in my arms.

«I don't know anything, I only know she was lying on the ground in an alley, I couldn't let her there and go ahead ignoring her» I explain with low voice.

«She must've been beaten up, look at the bruises» John says, observing her.

«We should call a doctor, even if it's quite hard to find one in the late evening...»

«Shavo, I've got a friend who is a doctor, we should try to call him.»

«Yeah?»

«There's a note with his number near the telephone.»

The bassist does as told and after a few seconds of research he picks up a yellow post-it.

«Is this one, Serj? Dr. Najarian?»

«Yep. Ask him if he can come right now... better not take any risks, we don't know the real conditions of the girl.»

Shavo nods and calls.
