After visiting with Lucas, I had felt a bit of joy sporadically throughout. "Hey Mama. How's Papa doin'?" I sighed. My Papa had something wrong in his head. Like maybe he was dropped as a babe or something. "Honey can't we just forget about Papa for a second and talk about the cut on your face!" My Mama placed her cold hand on my cheek and examined the wound. "Why?!" Mama slapped me across the face. I rubbed my red, cut cheek and sighed again but louder this time. "I was just fooling 'round again" my shoulders dropped. She never liked me visiting the woods and Lucas. "Well boy listen up no more fooling 'round with those friends of yours. I'm drawing the line" she threw down the wooden spoon. "Sorry Mama" my voice was cracking. I stared at Lucky's room waiting for her to come out and ask me all about my day but nothin'. Fear builded inside my throat. I couldn't grasp onto where she might be. "Hey where is Lucky?!" I flinched at the thought of her not comin' home. My Mama looked at me strictly. "Never came home from school. Like your damn older brother that one day. I'm trying to forget" she started to cut the chicken for the stew. "I'll check" I rolled out of my seat and walked out to my rusty blazin' red bike. The road was still and quite. Nobody in sight within miles. "HEY HEY HEY HEY JAY JAY COMMON COMMON COMMON COMMON" somebody screamed. I could not pin point the sound but I knew who it was. "LUCKY!!" I jumped off of my bike and walked over to Lucky who was waving her arms to get my attention. "Mama was worried. But I was even more worried. Papa didn't say nothin'" I shrugged and Lucky walked me over to a tree. "There's someone's liquid" she pointed to a red spot. I nodded at her observation. "But it was from a whipping. I heard it Jay!! I almost screamed when I saw the mans face!!" She breathed heavily. The tree was by where Lucas was. "Was it Lucas TELL ME LUCKY!!" I shook Lucky vigorously. "Yeah Jay" she walked me back out to the road. I was terrified.
