The Wolf Dog

Chapter 3

We went hunting an hour later.  My Alpha put us in our  positions but he glared at me when he told me where to go.

As he glared I let out a soft whine. He beared his teeth slightly and walked away. I crouched down and we watched as the herd of elk walked past. Some were large and some were small. Some where muscular and some where scrawny. As the last of the elk were passing, an old buck emerged. We could hear his joints cracking from arthritis and smell that he was sick. Wolves always try to go for the weaker animals before going for the young and healthy ones.

I looked to my pack members and their body language said 'prey'. I looked at my alpha, as I wished my mom was here, I could still hear the dogs voice. I wish I would have howled for help, maybe then my mom would still be here. I was ripped out of my thoughts when I heard the pack take off after the old elk. I gave chase passing Kayla then Meghan and lastly, Sandy. Reaching Zeke and Jace I passed them as well as I felt the adrenaline of the hunt surging through me. I know Jace is normally really good at running through fields, but if I work hard and aren't already tired I can out run him. I realized the Jackson and the rest of the pack dropped back, I guess to see how well we do, just us. I had a sudden boost of speed and caught up with Ryan who was in front of everyone.

"Hey! Took yuh long enough!" I glanced at him. Wondering why he is talking to me and not hunting.

"Focus on the hunt!" I yell and with another sudden burst of speed I pass him, even though I knew he was right behind me. I was gaining on the elder when I heard an angered noise from the herd and hooves pounding through the field I looked over and saw the herd leader, he was charging right for me!

Before I could react he hit me and threw me up into the air. I landed and stood up as quickly as I could, and started chasing the elder again, I landed right next to him.  The others caught up as I lunged at the elk leading to him landing and us killing him. I trotted over to my friends and nuzzled them. Then I remembered the bull who was coming at me again. But instead he turned and ran at Ryan, I ran over and shoved Ryan out of the way but I couldn't get a way fast enough.

He slammed into me and my vision was taken over by darkness.

I woke up and look around I was still in the field but I was alone. My pack was gone!

Then I heard a stick snap to my right. My snapped in that direction "who's there?!" Ryan's head pokes out of the bushes and then the rest of him followed.

"Oh... Ryan its just you."

"Just me? ... I don't know if you've noticed but... I'm bigger than you,... And more muscular."

"Just because your larger than me in every way it's not by much and I could easily beat you in a fight easy."

"Yeah sure" he went quiet and he stared at me so I decided to change the subject.

"Where is everyone?"

"Oh they are back at the main area... Jace and Zeke were going to stay until you woke up but we needed all the help we could get with that huge elk after we killed it."

"The elder?" Of course it was elder what was I thinking. He looked at me confused, as if I were a mouse trying to attack him.

"Yeah... The one that knocked you out left after the adults got involved."

"Oh" I walked over to him and looked at him in his soft brown eyes. He nudged me which almost pushed me over... almost. I nudged him harder and he had to re position his paws to keep himself from falling.

*Ahem* "Well we should head to the main area"

"Yeah... yeah" we walked off into the forest and and started for the main area.

"You should know that after you got hit and the adults joined in, we all thought that you were ok because you got right up and went off to after the elder elk! We couldn't believe it!"

"Really!?! After I got hit I just blacked out."

"Are you kidding me? You were the one who took down the elk!" After that we just traveled in silence were I was left to my own thoughts. Where I could think about what has happened all today and could reflect.

We got to the main area and right before we enter he lightly bit my ear and pulled which lead to me stopping and us standing together in silence.

"What's up?" he stared at me as if I'm supposed to know already. Why does every one like to do that to me, which leads to me feeling stupid.

"Well we have added a few new members to the pack... and right now I need to find my dad."

"Do you hang out with anyone except for your dad and Sandy and her henchmen?"

"Hahahahaha... I guess not... well I will see you later."

"Well me and my group are open to you when ever." Without letting him say another word I trot towards my friends and start getting to know some of the new pack mates that they were hanging out with.
