__Summary____________________

Hazelfur accidentally kills her old apprentice's true and forbidden love, Brokenwhisker from Cloudclan. Feathersong later dies in a thunderstorm, and breaks Hazelfur's leg in the process. Over the next few days, she finds herself being called from Starclan, and they say that her time with Rippleclan is nearly over. Hazelfur finds an apprentice, Sweetkit, and names her Hazelfur's apprentice. She later dies in her sleep, saying good-bye to her kits, Hunterpaw, Cherrypaw, Horsepaw, Wolfpaw, and Echopaw. Whilst doing so, they meet their father, Frostail, whom they'd never met before.

A brown she-cat sitting beneath a deep green bush snaps her eyes open at the sound of a wail. She scrambles to her feet, whipping her gaze around.

Sadness? There was hardly any of that here. . .

She wipes away her thoughts as the cry sounds again, but this time in a different pitch. She quickly races through the forest to the sound, halting right before she rams into a black and silver pelt. She backs up a step to see the cat more clearly, and then a hit in her chest nearly makes her fall to the floor. It wasn't a physical hit, but a mental one instead. It still made her sick.

She was just about to turn and run, when the cat turned around. "Hello, Hazelfur."

She cringes, not looking in her piercing blue eyes. Behind her, Hazelfur can see a calico tom glaring at her with so much hatred she hasn't seen in a cat before.

She finally lifts her head to stare directly into her old apprentice's eyes. "Greetings, Feathersong." Hazelfur searches her eyes for hate, revenge, sadness, or even regret. Anything that would tell her that her old apprentice was mad at her for killing her mate, and even herself in the end.

Nothing but calm rested in her eyes. It made Hazelfur cock her head to the side in confusion.

"I'm very sad to see you here again," Feathersong dips her head. "Unfortunately, that's where we meet."

It all spills out of Hazelfur. She can't bear to keep it in anymore, not even for a few more heartbeats. "I'm so sorry, Feathersong! I am a horrible mentor and medicine cat! It was against the code for you to be with him, but even more against the warrior code for me to kill Brokenwhisker. And you have every right to hate me."

Hazelfur dips her head down, not meeting either of their gazes. She turns around, starting to walk away. But then Feathersong gently touches her fur with her feathery tail, stopping her.

"Wait," she meows gently. "I'm not mad."

"You don't need to lie, Feather-" Hazelfur starts to snap.

"I'm not lying," Feathersong interrupts. "I'm really not mad. I understand what you were doing now. I was foolish to be with Brokenwhisker, yet I didn't want to be told what to do. I should be the one to apologize."

Hazelfur turns around, disbelief fresh in her green eyes. ". . . really? But. . .  oh, Feathersong. There's no reason for you to."

A purr sounds in her throat, and Feathersong opens her jaws to meow something to her former mentor. But Brokenwhisker shoots forward, standing next to his mate.

"Hazelfur's right," Brokenwhisker growls. "There's for reason for you to."

Feathersong glares at him. "Of course there is."

"She killed me!" he hisses, lashing his calico tal back and forth. Hazelfur flinches and stares at her paws, not wanting to be reminded of her horrible mistake. Was there ever going to be a time where they can just forget about the past? But inside her mind, she knows that as long as she's present, no cat will.

"Maybe you deserved it!" Feathersong growls.

Brokenwhisker steps back in surprise, blinking at his mate. "W-what?"

"You attacked her first, you know!" Feathersong reminds him. "You didn't have to do that."

"She didn't have to kill me."

"What was she supposed to do? Just sit there and let you hurt her?" Feathersong mutters and looks back at Hazelfur, her eyes softening. "It wasn't your fault, Hazelfur. It wasn't Brokenwhisker's either. Somethings we don't have power over, and they just. .  . happen."

"Can we stop talking about it?" Hazelfur sighs, flicking her ears. She finally forces her green gaze up to Feathersong's blue ones. "It was good to see you, Feathersong."

"Where's Frostail?" she asks, cocking her head to the side.

"Hunting, I think," Hazelfur replies. "I can go get him, if you want. . ."

Feathersong shakes her head. "I have feet for myself, thank you. Let's go walk to him. He was pretty funny, most of the time. I remember him visiting me when I was a kit in the nursery." Hazelfur purrs and nods her head. Together, the two she-cats walk into the sparkling forest, pelts brushed against each other's. Brokenwhisker stares after them, tail still lashing.

Relief sparked underneath Hazelfur's pelt that she could rekindle her friendship with the younger she-cat. She would've been haunted all her life in Starclan if she hadn't.

Are you happy now? Hazelfur thinks silently, to nothing in particular. I am in Starclan; I've made my life as a medicine cat-- mostly--, I've had kits and a mate, and now it's over. My life is over on solid warrior hunting grounds. But was this really all there was to the prophecy? 'Tree and tree will sway in the wind, but one will fall on the clan'.

Was I the tree that fell, or the one that stood strong above the others?
