Chapter 8
A brown tom stalked out of the shadows of a birch tree. He sat there and waited for her to home by witht the food. When a russet fured she-cat trotted up to him, he welcomed her with a purr.
"Nice catch." he mewed. "I'll hunt tomorrow." The cats took turns each day to hunt for themselves.
"You better." she purred affectionatly."Guess what I saw today?" She sat down by him and took a bit out of a blackbird.
"What?"
"Two of those clan cats traveling over to the human place. They stood far apart from each other though, so I don't think they ran off together."
"Oh." The brown tom finished his meal."Want to go look for them? We better teach them that this is our territory."
"No..." she looked away."I think we should see what they're doing. Maybe we can help them."
"What?" he hissed."And what good will that do to us? Remember the last time we helped some cats? They injured us and killed two of our kits."
"No, mouse-brain!" she mewed teasingly."We can get them to give us something in return if we help them do whatever they need! And besides, one of them looked pretty helpless, so I bet she won't attack us."
"Fine. Let's go now before they leave." The two cats got up and walked on the human path into the forest where she saw the clan cats. They walked silently so they won't hear them. As they walked, the she-cat heard a noise and signaled her mate to stop and be quiet. Through the bushes stood two cats- one she-cat was light brown and the other was a white tom. The two cats watched the clan cats.
"Come on, Frostail!" she mewed bitterly."We need to find his scent! I think he went this way."
"Well, I thought I smelt it but it was another tom." said the cat called Frostail. "Wait... I smell it now and it's fresh." As he said that, the two cats jumped out into the clearing. The traveling cats looked startled. Then Frostail automaticaly jumped in front of the she-cat.Then they started to puff their fur up with hostility.
"Who are you?" spat Frostail.
"I could ask you the same question, my friend." meowed the brown tom. "What do you want on our land?" He said kindly.
"Well... we need to find this orange tom with a black nose." said the brown she-cat."Have you seen him?"
"Um... yes!" meowed the russet furred she-cat. "He came by here just this morning! And I'm Fox, by the way, and this is Jay, my mate."
"Great! Now we know where he headed." mewed Frostail."Thanks!" he said to the cats.
"Wait!" said Fox."We can help you. I know where he is going!" the brown she-cat looked uncertain.
"How do I know I can trust you?" she asked.
"Well," meowed Jay."For starters, I'll lead you to where we last saw him so you can scent him. And what's your name, little lady?" He asked the brown she-cat.
"Hazelfur." she she mewed flatly."Let's go now." Jay and Fox lead them to an abandoned human house. Inside was human furniture and objects.
"Here we are." Fox mewed. "You can scent him over there." She pointed to a fresh bed of ferns. Hazelfur padded up to it.
"You can!" she said exitedly."Frostail come and smell." The white tom went over and sniffed the nest.
"Yes it's him." he said." Can you tell us where he was headed next so we can get an idea of where he went?" he asked the mates.
"He went down to the dam and across it and into the plains nest to it." mewed Jay.
Hazelfur stared at him in confusion."OH!" she mewed suddenly and her face turned into reconition. "I know what you mean now. Thanks! We will be going now." She and Frostail headed out and then Hazelfur stopped. "Can you come with us? We will find him better with your help." Hazelfur looked at them in hopefulness. Frostail then jerked her away and started mewing rapidly and quietly in her ear. He looked at the mates from time to time. When he stopped, Hazelfur mewed,"Please?" to Jay and Fox. Frostail glared at her. He turned away in annoyance.
"Sure!" said Fox."But you have to pay us back in a way."
"Fine. We will give you two days amount of food." she meowed and turned back to the human door. "Let's go now!" The four cats started to walk down to the dam and over the top of it. Hazelfur and Frostail looked down in dismay. They padded in the center of the dam the whole way across.
"They must not go on here a lot." Jay mewed quietly to Fox. Fox nodded in agreement.
When the finally go across with the clan cat's slow pace, they stopped to rest in the field Jay had told them about. They were panting from the trek down to the dam.
"Let's hunt now." said Frostail. "I'm starving." The clan cats got up to hunt only to stop as Fox and Jay sat there watching them get up. "Are you coming?"
"What?" asked Jay. "You hunt for yourselves?"
"Yeah..." mewed Hazlefur slowly."Don't you?"
"Um, yes of course we do!" mewed Fox sheepishly. "Right, Jay?"
"Yes." he said. "We are going over there and you guys can go over there, okay?" The clan cats nodded and ran off.
When all the cats were full, Fox suggested they go to sleep now. It was the end of dusk and the crickets started chirping. Fox and Jay curled up together and Frostail and Hazelfur stayed far apart from each other. They soon all fell asleep and jumped into their own dream.
