Vicky went to find a pillow and blanket from the cupboard while I tucked Caelen in, ignoring his feeble protests. I made myself a bed on the my sofa with the supplies Vicky fetched me from the cupboard.
"Night Roxie"
"Night Roxie"
"Night Vicky, night Rosie"
Turning the light off, they left the room, plunging the room into total, obliterating darkness.
"Caelen? Are you awake?" Silence. Oh well, I can talk to him tomorrow. I turn over and get comfy, trying to block out the pictures swarming around my brain so I can sleep. Hours later it finally works and I fall into a deep slumber full of disturbing images and weird dreams.
------------------------------------
The sun burst through the open curtains, showering the room with sunlight. I wished I'd remembered to close the curtains, I would've got a few more hours sleep! I rolled over and immediately fell off the sofa with a loud thump. Oh, yeah. Last night came flooding back to me. The perfect date with the tall, muscly, brown-haired boy called Caelen. The energy beam. The fight. I sat up and felt all the aches and pains of last night hit my body like a truck. I looked over to the bed and saw Caelen, still wiped out, laying in it.
"Darlings? Are you awake? Breakfasts ready!" Oh no! If Mum comes up here she'll see Caelen! I quickly pulled myself off the floor, put the pillow and blanket in the bottom of my wardrobe, I can put them away later, and went about covering him up making sure to leave room for breathing. "Roxanne, Rosetta, Victoria! It's breakfast! Come down stairs!" I heard mum climbing the stairs. Why does she have to use our full names? Oh no! I ran round the bed, making sure his was truly covered. I heard mums footsteps stop outside my door, "Darling, are you alright? You're normally the first one down when I call for breakfast." Knock, Knock. "Roxie? Can i come in?"
"Ummmmmm.......Not yet, I'm....getting dressed?"
"At this time in the morning? Have you showered?"
"Yeah...really early this morning!"
"Ok?" Mum sounded disbelieving but I think I'd won her over. I heard her walk away, round the corner, down the stairs. I pressed my ear against the door, making sure no-one was coming, then I went back to bed, to Caelen. I pulled the blanket off him and was greeted by the wide blank eyes of a slightly dazed teenage boy.
"Huh?" I laughed and offered my hand to pull him up. He took it gladly and sat up. "Where....?" His sentence remained half finished until his eyes widened in shock and he lept out of bed.
"Hey, Don't get up! You've got to many cuts and bruises, maybe even a broken arm." He ignored me and headed for the door. He put his hand on the doorknob, about to open it, then turned around and said, "Is your mum out there?" As if the thought had just occurred to him.
"Yeah, but if you really want to go, I'll show you a way out." He nodded then looked around my small room as if he expected a secret door to appear or something. I smiled and crossed over to the window to open it. I looked down. Good, the bush was still there. I swung my leg up and over so I rested with one leg Out and one in the window. I looked back over to him "Come on then!" He hesitated for only a millisecond then followed.
"Are we going to jump out the window?" He asked, concern etched on his perfect face.
"Well, yeah!" I smiled, swung my other leg over and jumped. I landed softly in the bush, rolled sideways and looked up. Caelen was sitting with both his legs dangling out the window. "Come on then" I laughed when he started back, almost falling back off the window ledge. He looked down at me and grinned. He launched himself down from the window landing softly beside me. "Wait here" I looked back at him and crept to the kitchen window. Mum had her back to me and was cleaning up, chatting away to my sisters as she did so. I looked through the window and caught Vickys eye. She nodded as if she understood and prodded Rosie. Before she could cry out, Vicky directed her towards me. Rosie raised an eyebrow and mouthed the word,
"Why?" I turned toward Caelen, beckoning him over with my finger pressed to my lips. He came up beside me and waved to my sisters. Rosie's eyes widened just as mum turned towards the window. I pulled Caelen down with me, below the window ledge, hoping we were low down enough. Caelen went to look through the window but I pulled him down. If mum saw him she would freak out, whereas if she saw me I could explain it away without too many questions. I crawled past the window and straightened up. I beckoned to Caelen and cautiously walked to the side of the house. I crouched down and made my way to a patch of bushes about 20 yards from the house. I scurried around the bush so I was out of view of the house and relaxed. Caelen soon joined me.
"Do you do this a lot?" Caelen looked at me in a new light, like he never knew that I was adventurous.
"Yeah, all the time!"
