Chapter Two - Saving One, Escaping Another
To say that the party was long gone was an understatement.
The music was blasting and pumping beat after beat after beat.
The strobe lights were flashing all different colors so I could only see people about twice a second.
There were not only drunk kids my age, there were drunk people ranging in all ages. The oldest guy I probably saw was maybe in his early thirties. By that stage in life, it was probably time to say goodbye to the good years and move on. But the youngest I saw was a boy and he looked barely fourteen. Who invited this kid?!
Red cups were flying everywhere: over people's heads, around corners, up stairs... it was insane to say the least. I was disgusted with every single individual here, except Drue.
I stood there, still in my daze, drinking in everything that was going on around me. Drue had walked off in search of his 'tuffy', leaving me behind without a word to stare aimlessly at the action of these people. I had considered following him, but decided that meeting the guy on the other end of the deal wasn't a good move. What if they decided to keep me here? Definitely not a good option.
The smell of alcohol was sickening and disorienting. But I was used to it. What really made my head spin was the stench of smoke and weed that floated through the house. It was so thick, you could see it in the air. No wonder people were having a good time.
It was like being in the same room as all of them was making me high as well. Again, disgusting.
But then, I saw her.
She had beautiful exotic green eyes, long and straight black hair, and creamy tan skin. But that wasn't what made me notice her.
The girl's face was twisted in horror. Her eyes were filled with terror. Her mouth was wide open, obviously screaming, but no one could really hear her over the loud pounding of the music. No one saw, or just pretended not to see that she was clearly thrown over the shoulder of a guy twice her size and almost twice her age. She was younger than me, smaller than me.
And he was going to rape her.
Yet, no one noticed, or they were too drunk to care. They spread like the sea of Moses and let him waltz on through with the girl groggily kicking and punching his back. She was drunk out of her mind like everyone else, but her self-awareness was surprisingly still present. She knew she didn't want to have sex with this guy. Even he knew it. But he was going to have her anyway.
I stared.
I stared because there wasn't anything else I could do.
I tried looking away, I really did. But my eyes continued to focus on her. I think I was secretly hoping to witness her escape, to see her revenge, to compel her not to give up. I wanted to see this girl triumph over something nearly impossible.
I didn't want to have to save her myself. Call me selfish, but if I caused a scene in unknown territory, I could suddenly become the center of attention, something I was striving to stay away from.
All of this ended up unfolding in a matter of a few seconds. She was being carted towards the stairs and it was my make-or-break decision.
I decided... to let her go. Horrible, I know.
I wouldn't be able to stop this guy, even if I had the knife to do it. All I would be able to do was threaten him. I wasn't sure if I was able to go through with it, either. Would I be able to throw the knife? Would I even be able to dodge the blow that would surely come after if I missed?
