Chapter 3 - Plans
3 DAYS LATER
I looked outside the classroom window and all I could see was the beautiful stormy sky. I used to love days like these because it meant that I could stay inside, wrap myself up in a blanket, and watch a nice movie. But as I grew up, I found out more and more that days like these ruined my escape to the outside world and away from my alcoholic father.
"Kari, if you could keep your eyes on me, that'd be much appreciated."
My eyes snapped to the front of the classroom where my math teacher was standing with an expectant look upon his face.
I scrolled my eyes up and down, gave a smirk, and finally said, "Uhm, no thanks." With that, I leaned back in my seat and crossed my arms, drinking in the laughter that surrounded me, even though my cheeks burned at the thought of talking back to a teacher. I gave him an apologetic smile, but he wasn't fooled.
Mr. Steel gave me a stern look and narrowed his eyes slightly. "I'll be seeing you after class, then."
I halfheartedly rolled my eyes and continued staring outside. I didn't need to learn about what was happening on the white board. I had already read the entire book and finished half of the book problems. It was just my bad attitude and snide comments that got me into trouble at school.
The final bell rang and just like everyone else, I packed my bag, but definitely at a much slower pace. I waited until the classroom had cleared out before I walked up front.
He was busy erasing the board. He turned around.
Before he could get anything in, I blurted, "I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist the opportunity."
"I know," he chuckled, walking back to his desk. "But pretty soon, one day I'm just going to send you to the office. You know that, right?"
I sighed. Every teacher had their breaking point. "Yea, I can see that happening," I laughed with him.
"What I don't understand, though," he began, turning back to me, "is how you can get such stellar grades and..."
"Not act the part?" I filled in. I raised my eyebrows, waiting to see what Mr. Steele would say.
He paused. "You said it, not me." We both started laughing at that.
"I don't know," I finally said. "I like to be who I want while being who I need to be at the same time. It surprises people."
"That's going to be my quote of the week. Thanks."
"Really?" I smiled. "Cool." I could see Janae and Rose waiting impatiently outside of the classroom. I rolled my eyes as they giggled uncontrollably at Mr. Steel. "And that would be my cue," I said pointing towards the door.
"Have a nice weekend," he chuckled, shaking his head at the two drama queens outside.
"You too!" I quipped before opening the door and herding my friends down the hall. "Come on, we can gossip about your creepy obsession with Mr. Steel outside," I gritted through my teeth in fake annoyance.
"Oh come on, Kari! Don't deny it! He's soooo attractive I don't see how you can just sit there and not do anything about it!" Rose gushed.
"He's probably in his 30s!" I said disgusted.
"Love has no age!" Janae giggled, her eyes looking off in the distance dreamily.
"You two, I swear." I rolled my eyes as my friends only laughed at how uncomfortable I was with the topic of my math teacher.
