I woke up to the lovely noise of a car alarm. I rolled over and out of bed. I pulled on my schools uniform, which was slacks, button down shirt, tie in the schools colors- blue and gold, and a grey sweater vest. Super fashionable. I went downstairs and had a bowl of cereal for breakfast. After wolfing that down, I put my bowl in the sink, grabbed my bag and 10 bucks, and headed to meet my friend Lacey.

I walked to her house and saw her listening to music on the steps. I snuck up behind her, grabbed her and growled in her ear,“Gimme all your money now!”

She screamed and elbowed me in the face.

I let go of her and my hand flew to my nose. “God Frank, you scared the shit out of me! I was going to kill you!” she said. I said, “Yeah but I'd never stop haunting you.”

We started walking to 7-11 to grab a snack before school. We go to the same uber Catholic school and they only serve “pure food”. They also have a bunch of strict rules. School uniforms, no dyed hair, no piercings, girls hair must be braided, skirts have to be a certain length, heels must be a certain height, and they can't wear any make up.

It can be a little ridiculous. We aren't even allowed to wear jackets!

We walked into 7-11 and bought coffee and cup noodles.
I handed the guy a ten and he threw me a pack of cigarettes over the counter. Our neighborhood isn't super clean cut. We lit up our cigarettes and drank out coffee, trying to get warm. We stepped into the quad in front of the school.

“Ready for another week with the god squad?” Lacey asked.

“No way in hell” I replied.

“Why, Franklin Iero, how dare you say such a word?”, she said in a mock serious voice, “You're practically sprinting into the arms of Satan, what with your swearing and witchcraft and homosexualities! Whatever shall we do with you?”

“Strip me down and leave me in a gay bar while you go back to the 1930's?” I asked.

We threw our heads back laughing.

Lacey started trying to blow smoke rings. They ended up looking like grey blobs. I tried to blow rings and did a little better than her. She pulled a face at me and blew a little smoke in my face. I blew some back at her and soon we were surrounded by a grey cloud.

She took a breath and said, “It's kind of nice like this. Nobody and nothing. It's easy like this. I wish we could be like this. Just smoke”

“Yeah. Free as the wind and nothing to hold us down. ”

The bell rang, interrupting a moment so still it stopped time.

Jolting back to reality, I said goodbye to Lacey and went to my first class.
