I sat on the couch staring at the phone for a moment, devising an explaination for my mom. In this situation I didn't know what to say. I obviously couldn't lie to her, she was my mom! She can see right through any lie.
"Erm, well, you see," I fidgeted, "he's my friend and it's how we joke around."
"Mhm, I can understand that," she said, "but what I don't understand is why you talk to him more than you do your own boyfriend."
I tilted my head to the left and gave her a stale face, "because he's more entertaining, and interesting, and he'll actually respond within a day."
She furrowed her brow, "it sounds like you like this boy."
I was getting slightly irritated, "that's because I do, mom."
"You have Jay, think about that," she said slightly disappointed.
"I have! He does nothing, mom! He stopped trying once he had me, and I'm tired of waiting, hoping he'll realize that I want him to try." I said.
"This is true," she responded, "well, if you like Andy so much, why haven't you broken up with Jay yet?"
"He won't answer my texts or phone calls," I said.
This time it was my mom who'd given the stale face, "that boy is gonna hear it!"
I started laughing at her as she called Jay and gave him grief for not answering me for a few weeks.
She handed me the phone so I could speak with him.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hey, sorry I haven't responded or answered in a while, I've been... busy," he said, hesitant on the last word.
"Mhm, with what? Dying?" I asked.
"No, with dealing with other people," he said, slightly irritated.
"That's cool, hey while you were 'away' I met this guy, he's now a really close friend of mine. You might like him, sorta," I retort, hoping he caught my meaning.
"Oh? That's nice," he said.
I was starting to get pissed, "that's nice? Really, that's nice? You gotta be friggin' kidding me. That's all you have to say?"
"Yes, you have a new friend that's close to you and is probably gay, like the other ones," he said.
"EXCUSE ME?" I yelled through the phone.
"Is he not gay?" he asked.
"He most certainly is not! Jay, that's slightly offensive!" I exclaimed.
"How is that offensive?" he asked.
"You practiacally just said that the only way I can have a guy close to me that isn't you, is gay."
"No, that's not what I meant," he tried to defend himself, "what I meant was that if a guy gets close to you and is comfortable with you that quickly then he's probably gay."
I chuckled, "he's been a friend since the beginning of the school year, i've told you about him on several occasions. He's been comfortable with me, he cares what's going on with me, and he's there for me at the drop of a hat."
"Wow, you make him sound like a dream boat," my mom whispered.
"That's because he is, mom," I laughed.
"What are you talking about?" Jay asked, sounding a little perplexed.
"Don't worry about that last part, I was talking to my mom," I chuckled a bit.
