CHAPTER SEVEN part two
Vincent was wrong when he said he wouldn't be seeing April again. He saw her everywhere! From the halls to the dining hall it seemed like Fate was trying her hardest to push them together.
It was really starting to bother him, how every time he passed her she would develop a strange fascination with the floors. He knew what was going on with her, but why did she have to avoid him because of it?! Was she too proud to ask for help? All it would take is one plea for help and he would... not be able to do anything.
Vince was twelve when his powers started to develop. It started off as just an inkling of an idea, a feeling that he was different, but as the required forty-six days passed, he started to understand why. He had been playing a friendly game of one-on-one football with Jace when his ability had first appeared.
Jace had been blatantly cheating. He knew Vince wouldn't say anything about it, never one for confrontation or calling people out. But Vince was getting annoyed with Jace taking advantage of him. He imagined the slack garden hose straightening out as Jace ran over it, then he would have the perfect opportunity for a comeback.
As Vince thought about that, the garden hose stretched out, just as Jace ran over it, causing him to trip. In an unnatural way, the football fell out of Jace's grip and ended up in Vincent's outstretched hands. But it didn't give Vincent the desired effect. Instead of being embarrassed by his face-plant into the grass, Jace jumped right up, looked around and pointed at Vince asking 'You too?'
It took forty-six days for Jace and Vincent to fully develop their powers, and not once during that period of time did Jace's family provide any help. Jace's family knew perfectly well what was going on. But Alec Daecon had given them strict orders not to say anything to either of the boys. Fearing for their lives, but at the same time trying to prove they were his most loyal followers, they obeyed.
It pissed Vince off that Jace's parents didn't try to help them at all. He didn't care if they were under threat of death, if they really loved Jace and Vince as they said they did, would they really keep them in the dark like that? No.
Alec Daecon was a cruel man. Some would go so far as to call him deranged, which probably wasn't too far from the truth. He found happiness in others' pain.
His hair was white as snow and thinning with his age, his eyes black, no pupil in sight. He was a scary sight to withhold, but those who grew up around him had an undying respect for him. Vincent used to be no different, but now his respect had turned into fear and hatred, had died along with his parents.
As Vincent left the school's campus, his core burned with hatred, knowing that in just a few minutes he would be standing before the retched man. He entered a black mercedes, sitting behind the passenger seat. Beside him sat Jace, something that greatly surprised him. He almost breathed a sigh of relief.
"You are going to get us killed!" raged Jace, throwing himself in Vince's direction. Vince had little time to react and before he could think, Jace's hand was at his throat.
"What are you talking about?" Vincent yelled back. Jace relaxed his grip, sitting back.
"Your little crush on Justice, what else do you think this meeting is about?" Jace snarled.
"Then why are you here? If that's what it is about, then why are you here too? It has nothing to do with you," Vince answered defiantly.
"It has everything to do with me!"
"Can you be any more self-centered? Since when does this have anything to do with you?"
"My family and I welcomed you into our world! Alec helped you learn to control your power. And how do you choose to thank us? You develop a soft spot for April freaking Justice!" By now Jace was in Vincent's face, the car was stopped outside a newly restored Victorian styled house. "But you're right, it's your life on the line, not mine. I'm done." Jace got out of the car and walked up the steps to the door. Vincent reluctantly got out of the car and before he could chicken out, the black mercedes sped off. Before either of them could knock on the door, it was whisked open and Jace was enveloped in a hug. His mother let go of him once she noticed Vincent standing behind him.
"We are meeting in the den," she said to him, never taking her eyes off of Vincent. Under her gaze, Vince shifted nervously. "What are you waiting for? Get in there!" she snapped at him, not the loving lady he remembered from just two weeks before. Vince ducked his head as he entered the house feeling every bit the kid she was treating him.
He walked down the hallway and through the kitchen towards the den, his heart beating in anticipation. He wasn't quite sure what to expect, what kind of mood Alec would be in. Would he be willing to look past this? Or would he be taken out of school, his death disguised as an accident?
Vincent shook his head, not wanting to think about the consequences. Luckily, as he entered the den, his mind stopped wandering, knowing exactly what would happen. The answer was there in Alec Daecon's glare and flared nostrils.
"Come!" Alec barked to which Vincent waisted no time in obeying. His heart reached an ultimate crescendo, threatening to break out of his body. Vincent stood in front of Alec, staring into his pitch black eyes. He knew this was the end.
