CHAPTER FIVE
The class was excitedly abuzz with the news of the confrontation between April and Jace and then April and Vincent Green. Everyone knew there was bad blood between April and Jace but they never thought she would yell at his friends. He was even trying to help her!
"Did you see him trip her?!"
"What did he say to her? She looked about to cry..."
"She's usually so nice-"
"I know! But she yelled at Vincent."
"He didn't deserve that, I mean, he was only trying to help."
"What did Jace say to her?"
When April stormed into the room, everyone fell silent. The class watched as she slammed her bag onto the desktop and sat down in the back of the classroom, not her usual spot. She took a shaky breath and angrily wiped the tears away from her eyes. After a few seconds of staring straight ahead April began to wonder why it was so silent. Slowly April looked around her, only to see the rest of her classmates staring at her. For a while she just took in the sight of them but then she stood up. The class held their breath, expecting her to cause a scene, after all, after today's outburst with Jace and Vincent, wasn't anything possible? Instead she just threw her bag over her shoulder and left the classroom. There was a moment of silence while the students let out their breath and then the class was abuzz once more. Not only were they talking about that morning's confrontation but now also the fact that April walked out of class.
The class was so busy gossiping that they didn't notice her best friend walk into the classroom. Daniel set his bag down on the floor near a desk and sat down in it. He looked around the classroom for April but to no avail. He figured she was out in the hall socializing and would be in soon. He was about to go find her when the bell rang, cutting that thought short. The students began taking their seats, but continued talking since the teacher was not present. Daniel leaned over to get his textbook out of his bag when he heard something that caught his attention.
"...tripped her and when Vince went over to help her up, she yelled at him. He looked awfully hurt."
"What are you talking about?" Daniel asked, turning around in his seat to face Gabriella and Monica. They looked shocked that he of all people did not know what was going on, but were quick to fill him in. "So she just left?"
"Yeah, looked at us, grabbed her things and walked out," Gabriella said indignantly. "I'd hate to be her. The people in her house are bound to give her a hard time about tonight."
"Yeah..." Daniel said, not really paying attention. "Wait, so you said Vince walked off after April yelled at him?"
"Uh huh," Monica answered, leaning in. Daniel was quiet for a second, thinking.
"Is that why Jace and him looked about ready to fight each other?" The girls just stared at him, shocked.
"What? But they're best friends."
"I was walking back from Washington when I saw them. They were practically face-to-face. They both looked pretty pissed," Daniel said, recalling what he saw.
"Did you hear what they were saying?" Gabriella questioned, soaking up the new information. Daniel shook his head. "Do you think it had something to do with April?" At that moment the teacher walked in, apologizing to the class for her tardiness. She dove right into the lesson on exponential powers, but Daniel wasn't paying attention. Did it have something to do with April?
*-*
Vincent Green was down by the lake when he heard the church bell toll, warning that lunch was soon. He let the sound fade into the background. He didn't want to go in there where Jace and April were, especially since the whole school was talking about what happened that morning. He was beyond mad at Jace for what he did to April. If he went into the dining hall and someone asked him what happened he would surely explode. He didn't want people to see him like that, so he sat by the lake, staring at the water's surface instead.
