The One

CHAPTER 4

I woke up in a daze lying down on a thin mattress. Finn standing over my head.

"How ya feeling ?" Finn asked with a sweet smile.

"I have a massive head ache, and I'm really confused. "

"We found you - we just found you. " he stuttered.

"Yea, I remember running from you, then seeing this building. The only building still standing. But everything after that is a blur. I felt ... This dark and evil presence the closer I got to the steps.

"Anything else ?" Finn looked intrigued. Like he knew something he wasn't telling me.

"Yea, I uh.. I remember bright colours of blue and purple and then I was in a hallway. At the end of the hallway there was a door then - oh God !" I covered my hand with my mouth. Remembering what I saw when I travelled through time.

"What is it ?" Finn asked.

"No I can't, I just have to go home." As I thought about all the horrible things that I had seen that night. The same feeling in my stomach returned and once again I was dizzy. The robes and the ritual. It was evil, pure evil and I felt that I had to stop it. I put my hands on my forehead and looked around the dimly lit room. The walls looked like they would fall apart, just by touching them. The floors were dirty and grey. Just like everything else in this broken city. Something caught my eye, a black oval shaped object with a red dial and a rectangular touch screen. It was made of some kind of alloy that I have never seen before.

"What is that?" I asked Finn pointing to the device.

"It's nothing." Finn lied.

"Finn your cute and your accent is to die for but I'm not stupid and your not a good liar. Now tell me the truth about something or I will- "

"Fine. Calm down, this device will help with your ability. Help you control it. "

"My ability ? You mean you knew, all this time you knew?" I was even more confused then I was before.

"I didn't exactly know about your ability. But when you arrived out of nowhere I did suspect you might be able to jump through time. "

"Then what about this device ?" Finn stiffened up and started pacing the room.

"Well? If you didn't know about my ability how did you know to have this device ?" I asked again.

"That's only because ...um well because .. I have your ability. Well actually it's my ability- our ability whatever. We share this same gift. "

"Gift ? More like a curse." I was angry. Angry he didn't say anything sooner and angry he had my ability. As much as I didn't like admitting it I thought that I was special. My 'gift' made me special. And if he had this gift too then what was my purpose. And it happened again. This mind splitting head ache and swirling colours. Once again I was sucked into another world. I heard faintly Finn trying to pull me back but it was too late I was already gone.

**** I was standing behind a tall ficus looking into an old fashioned living room. Pale yellow wallpaper with light brown flowers. Eggshell coloured couches and what looked like a 50 year old recliner. The room was overall extremely old fashioned and quite stuffy. The light was like an old Billard room. As I was taking in the change of scenery and old woman walked in the room with two other old women. The women sat down on the couches. And sipped their tea. I was getting bored when one of the old women spoke up. She said "There has to be something done about the Ethel. " The women changed their expressions. It seems that word has that kind of effect on people. "There is no way, they will see you coming before you can change the outcome ." Another woman said. " Mary you have to listen. It's to dangerous." She continued. I wondered if I knew who she was. She looked so familiar. " But there is another. They won't see her coming she is the one ." She said to Mary. "My granddaughter, Katherine. She will inherit my ability. " Mary, my grandmother. ****

And just like that , the world spun. And the colors of teal and magenta blinded me. And I was back in the cold room, dark and empty. With Finn holding on to me.

"I have to go back!" I screamed.

"No calm down. I'm here. Your fine you can't go back. " Finn tried to calm me. But nothing he said could've worked.

"I need to talk to her, she'll know how to help me. She's the only one who'll understand. " I didn't realize it but I began to sob. I truly missed her. Seeing her again reminded me of the love that died when she did. I just wanted to see her again. I wanted to hear her sing 'Why do fools fall in Love?' ,And drink her tea. Listen to her talk about what it was like in the old country. Feel her hold me when we watched old time movies together. Hear her ask why the characters were so stupid. Hear her raspy voice yelling at the t.v. I couldn't stop crying.

"Sssh it's gonna be fine. " Finn comforted. But he didn't understand. Nobody did. But it felt good having him hold me. So I let him, and I laid there with him until I fell asleep.

"Good morning Sunshine. " I woke up to see Jasper's face above mine. I knew it was Jasper because only he could wear such a sly smile and get away with it.

"Is this for me ?" I asked, taking notice of the tray with toast, eggs and tea on it.

"Yep. Hungry ?"

"Starved !" I didn't realize that it had hours since I last ate, and this food looked especially delightful.

"Did you and Finn have a nice night ?" I spit out my tea.

"What are you talking about?" I panicked.

"Don't get your knickers in a twist, I saw you and Finny boy cozying up last night. "

"That was nothing. " I lied. In all honesty it felt nice, really nice. Kind of like how I felt when William smiled or said hello to me in the hallway.

"Oh yes. I'm sure. " I hated how Jasper always had a look on his face like he knew everything about you and you knew nothing about him. And that was exactly the case. I knew nothing about him.

"Are you done?" I asked irritated.

"Yea, yea. If you want my brother - I mean like my brother then so be it. Who am I to stand in the way ?" He said as he walked out of the room. I also realized that I was not wearing the same clothes that I had been wearing the day before.

"JASPER!" I hollered down the dark hallway. He came striding down the hallway without a care in the world. And Finn came running after him.

"What did you do now ?" Finn asked Jasper.

"Me? I didn't do anything. " Jasper replied.

"Yes you did ! You changed my clothes while I was sleeping!" I screamed frustrated. They both burst out laughing at me.

"Uh Katherine, you changed your clothes after you woke up last night. " Finn said with the biggest smile on his face.

"I what ?"

"Yea. You did. I can't believe you thought I did that. " Jasper said laughing. I could've died of embarrassment.

"Um yea. I was just kidding. Ha ha." I tried to make it seem like a joke. But no one bought it.

After I changed back into my own clothes I told Finn and Jasper that I had figure out what's going on here. I told them they either tell me or I will find out myself. They told me that Estel is an ancient group. And by ancient I wanted to know if they meant prior to 2013 . And they said yes.

"The Estel use demonic energy to gain power. They 'pray' to a demon named Rengar. " Finn explained.

"They have been sacrificing and killing people for centuries. After December 2013 is when they started taking an interest in the world. Jacob Rhengard ran for office. Jacob is the leader of the Estel. We don't know what their end game is. But seeing as they had America bomb 16 countries and our own city, I doubt it's world peace. "

"But where do I come into this ?" I asked confused.

"We were hoping you would tell us. You are from the year 2013. " Jasper said.

"Do you want me to stop Jacob Rhengard, before he becomes the president. "

"It won't matter they'll find someone to replace him. "

"So what then ?" All of a sudden everything stopped. Finn and Jasper were frozen. I waved my hands in front of their faces and tried to wake them up but it wasn't working.
