Chapter Ten

Before any of the members of Team Seven could act, I quickly grabbed Konohamaru’s wrist and wrenched him away from Kankuro’s reach. I roughly shoved the young boy at Sakura, hoping that she could keep him safe while I dealt with the shinobi from Sunagakure. The smirk quickly fell from Kankuro’s face as he stared at me, his dark gaze bearing into my own. I refused to back down, but just as quickly as it had disappeared, a smug look appeared over his expression as he took a step toward me. I kept myself rooted in front of my team; I knew it was the right thing to do and it wasn’t like I was afraid to face the male. It was true that his abilities were still a secret to us all, but so were mine. Kankuro lifted a hand to grab my shoulder, most likely to push me aside, but I quickly countered by grabbing a hold of his wrist tightly. A shocked look entered his gaze as I quickly brought my leg up and kicked him in the center of the chest, causing him to stumble several feet back. My gaze was locked on my opponent as I quickly wiped away the remnants of blood from my mouth with my thumb, and rubbed it down the length of my seal. A burning sensation emitted from my seal as it immediately began to glow red; my katana immediately materialized within my hands, and with a quick flick of a notch on its handle, I quickly separated a second katana from my main weapon.

I expertly wielded both katanas—one in each hand—as I quickly got into a defensive stance in front of Konohamaru. I could feel shock and awe radiating from my teammates, and I even caught some of the stares that they were giving me, especially the look that Sasuke was currently trying to hide with no avail. A small smirk pulled at the corners of my mouth as I stared at Kankuro, his narrowed gaze and clenched jaw granting me great satisfaction. He took one step toward me and I immediately pointed one of the katanas at his heart. “Before you take another step, I seriously suggest you think about the consequences.”

“What’s a little girl like you going to do, huh? Do you even know how to use those weapons? I bet you’re all talk and no action.” Kankuro scoffed, a smirk pulling at the corners of his lips as he began mocking my abilities as a kunoichi. The smirk that adorned my lips quickly fell as anger washed over me; I narrowed my gaze as I scrutinized Kankuro. I wasn’t sure what abilities he was skilled at, but I would just have to take my chances when it came to fighting him. There was no backing down now; he insulted my pride and I needed redemption. He was degrading me as a kunoichi because of my gender and my age, and I wasn’t going to have none of that. My gaze slowly shifted to the blonde female behind him; the disinterest that dominated her features was enough to tell me that she wouldn’t interfere if blows were exchanged. I blinked for a split second and that was the very moment that Kankuro decided to act. The boy rushed at me with a kunai in his hand; I wasn’t startled by his sudden attack, but I was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t using the object attached to his back. My curiosity was irking me and I really wanted to know why Kankuro was carrying around such a bulk.

I easily and swiftly blocked the kunai with one of my katanas—it only took me a moment to seek out Kankuro’s blind spot and I immediately attempted to stab the boy with my free katana. Kankuro side-stepped my attack and we began circling each other, eyeing the other for a weakness. I had to admit that Kankuro was quite good at dodging a majority of my attacks, but a small smirk pulled the my lips the moment I slashed one of my katanas across his cheek. Fury echoed within the boy’s dark gaze as he smudge the blood across his face, a thin line of blood beginning to drip down the length of his face. It was then that Kankuro lost his cool and relied on his need for revenge to take control over his actions. He became reckless and slow, throwing aside the kunai he had held so that he could concentrate on landing physical blows. It wasn’t difficult for me to dodge every punch and kick that had been aimed in my direction, and I almost pitied the boy. Kankuro aimed a blow for my face and I was suddenly growing tired of toying with him; within a blink of an eye, I side-stepped the blow and slashed the katana across the back of one of his knees. Kankuro howled in pain as he fell down to one knee, panting as he kept his gaze fixated on the ground.
