Chapter Three

My gaze lingered over Sasuke Uchiha as he trained hard with his fellow teammates; I watched as he effortlessly threw a kunai, the blurry weapon speeding towards a target and lodging deep into the dead center of it. My gaze narrowed slightly as I studied his movement, watching him from afar. ‘So he is the famous survivor of the Uchiha clan massacre? Interesting.’ I may have spent the entirety of my life living beneath ground, but that did not mean that gossip didn’t reach my ears. I knew some aspects that revolved around the elimination of the Uchiha clan; my gaze wavered over the raveonette for a moment longer before lowering it down to my braid. ‘It seemed that Sasuke and I had more in common than I had expected.’ Plucking the ends of my braid, I sat beneath the tree’s shade in complete boredom. Kakashi Sensei meant well by making me wait until I recuperated to train with his team, but sitting there and watching the genin practice with their shuriken and kunai made me want to join in since I felt completely left out. It would have also been nice to get to know the three genin since I was still a complete stranger through their eyes. Every once in a while, I felt a pair of eyes lingering over me, studying my still form;  I didn’t have to look up to know that the Uchiha was staring at me from afar. A part of me longed to speak to him, to get to know him, but that would only cause problems in the near future. ‘It would be best if I stayed away.’

My gaze slightly narrowed as I sensed that I had already made an enemy in the Hidden Leaf; every so often, I would catch Sakura watching me through heated eyes. Naruto’s comment from earlier must have gotten to her head, but there was no reason to overreact—she truly believed I was crossing over onto her territory. A weak smirk formed on my lips from the very thought; could a girl truly be that dense in the head? Bringing myself back to reality, I lifted my gaze to continue watching the training session that underwent before my eyes. Sasuke’s onyx gaze immediately met my emerald hues; my face felt heated as I immediately tore my gaze away from his, finding the ends of my braid much more interesting. ‘The way that he was looking at me made me feel…uncomfortable. It felt as if he were staring right through me, seeing something that most people couldn’t. I felt as if he were staring right into my soul.’ Sasuke Uchiha left me feeling nervous for the first time in years, and the mere thought frightened me to a certain extent. I was immediately pulled from my thoughts when my guard sensed an approaching object flying at me at dangerous and deadly speeds. Lifting my gaze, I noticed the kunai that was heading straight towards me. My eyes narrowed slightly as I almost used my Kekkei Genkei to deflect the feeble weapon; a golden hue flashed through my eyes and I could only hope that no one had noticed the immediate change in my eye color as I forced the natural energy within my body to subside.

With a small flick of my wrist, I caught the kunai with ease and began twirling it between my thumb and forefinger. I lowered my gaze onto the weapon, closing my eyes until I knew for sure that they had returned back to their usual emerald shade. The metal felt familiar within my grasp as I continued to twirl the kunai between my fingers; my eyes snapped open as my gaze fixated on the weapon Sakura had thrown my way. A small smile pulled at my lips as my grasp on the kunai tightened; I met the shocked and concerned gazes that radiated from Kakashi, Sasuke, and Naruto. The smile quickly formed into a smirk as I watched Sasuke, his jaw slightly ajar. “I’m not useless, ya know?” I dropped the kunai at my side, the metal clashing against the grass as I returned my gaze to ends of my braid. ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have caught the kunai. I could have merely moved my head to the side and avoided all this attention. My head is obviously not in the right place.’ Kakashi was by my side in seconds, the shock look remaining in his gaze as he watched me through wide eyes. I gazed up at him with an innocent look plastered over my features; I already knew the question that was running through everyone’s minds. “You’ve never asked if I had experience as a shinobi. I’m sorry, Kakashi Sensei. I should have mentioned to you earlier that I had a master back in my village who taught me the ways of the ninja.”
