Matt's POV
* * * * *

After getting away from the town, we grabbed a couple of snacks to eat on the way there. My father had bought a house up north and he never went there. He had several houses across the country but never used them.

He told me that it was just in case he had to hide if he had ever gotten close to caught. But I knew that he had forgotten about the houses. He was too busy worrying about his business. My father always tried to get me into the mafia business. But I was always trying to get away from trouble, instead of getting in into it.

Things have been going pretty smoothly until we saw a cop car near the state border.

Shit.

"Sarah, I need you to get out of the car and run behind those trees. Just walk ahead until you cross the state border. Don't let the cops see you. I'll pick you up after we're a good distance away. OK?"

"OK, Matt." I squeezed her hand as a reassurance before she got out of the car.

Sarah slipped out of the passenger side and waited until the cops were checking the inside of another car. She ran behind the trees and I no longer saw her.

Keep it cool, Matt. You've escaped these damn cops many times. It'll be quick. Stay calm.

"Have you seen this girl? She entered the police station as a kidnapped person and had disappeared yesterday with a white male in his mid forties." The police officer showed a picture of Sarah.

Don't turn red.

I furrowed my eyebrows and pretended to look closer as if to try to remember her face.

"No. I'm sorry, officer. I haven't seen her." I stared straight at him, showing no fear.

"Why are you heading out of state?"

"I'm visiting my girlfriend. It's our anniversary. She goes to college up north."

"We're gonna check your car, sir. Any weapons or illegal items we should know about beforehand?"

"No, sir." I didn't dare look right into the woods. No freaking way. I wasn't taking any chances. I tapped my fingers on the wheel, waiting.

The officer walks up to my window again. "Good to go, sir. Have a happy anniversary."

"Thank you."

"One more thing. What are you getting her? I don't see her gift in your car."

I chuckled at his question.

Easy. So easy.

"I'm taking her some place really special."

"Alright. That seems nice. Have a good one."

"You too, officer."

I drove ahead, smiling my ass off inside. I had a good feeling about a life with Sarah. All we had to do is blend in. Hide our identities. I'd show her how.

I looked right and saw her hiding behind a tree. She ran as I opened the passenger door. "Everything good, Matt?" She panted.

"Yeah. That was a really cute picture they had of you." I chuckled.

"What? Oh. Yeah. They took a picture of me at the police station. And it was not cute. It was so weird. My smile looked twisted."

"For a girl who's been living in a wooden box her whole life, you sure are pretty vain."

"Vain?"

"It means you care or worry about your physical appearance. Usually more than someone else would."

She nodded in understanding. "I would always wonder if I looked like any of the other girls in the world. Dale told me I looked fine but I still had that doubt. Dale had some small mirrors around the cabin. Dale..."

Her voice shook. I couldn't keep my eyes on the road. She was crying. And it was all because of Dale.

Tears aren't worth that bipolar asshole.

"Please don't get upset. He isn't worth any tears. You know how he treated you. He wanted to sell you for money. And he ended up dead. Bad people always fail in the end. They may have their little victories along the way, but in the end, they won't get what they want.

Don't think about him. Think about us. Our new lives together. I'll teach you all there is to know about keeping a secret identity. We gotta think about now. Now and later. Not about the past. I want you to be happy, Sarah. You deserve better."

She had calmed down and was sniffling a little. But I knew she would stop crying soon. "I'm glad to have you with me. Helping me. I think we will have a good life."

I smiled. "We will have a good life." I stared at the road. I was liking Sarah more and more. Then I did something I didn't know I did myself until after several seconds. My right hand took Sarah's and we stayed like that.

Life is good. It really is.
