SIERRA
My mother runs a hand through my curly, crimson hair, smiling to herself, not realising that I can see her through the mirror. I clear my throat and she suddenly looks up, her eyes meeting mine in our reflections.
"I just" – she shakes her head – "I can't believe you're leaving."
"This isn't my choice, Momma," I say quietly. "Just because Noah wanted out, doesn't mean I do."
For a moment she's silent, and doesn't know what to do, but then she gives my shoulders a gentle squeeze and kisses my cheek. "I know, sweetie. It's just hard to actually see that our little princess has grown up." She places an index finger under my chin, pushing it up so my eyes meet hers, and says, "Into a beautiful, young woman."
I turn away, knowing that I can never be what my mother wants me to be. She doesn't know my dark side, yet she thinks she's seen it. I want to keep it that way. She doesn't know that I'm nothing like how she was raised. Grandmother Nova made it clear that she raised her precious Rosalie into a courteous mortal vampire, who killed no-one, but drank blood from bags.
"I can never be truly beautiful, Momma. I'm not pure. I drink blood. I survive on it. That's not beautiful."
She frowns. "Sierra, this is who you have been since I gave birth to you. And you are pure and a creature of the night. Embrace who you are, my dear, and you will find more beauty in it than resenting it. I promise you."
I guess she's right; her words seem like her last – as if I won't ever see her again. In a way, this could be my last time I'm seeing her. Next thing I know is I'm on my way to VWI and I find my partner, we fall in love, and marry. And my story really begins.
I stand up and hug her, hard. Tears prickle at the back of my eyes and I let them fall. "I love you."
She sniffles. "I love you too, ma petite reine." She kisses the top of my head. "I'm going to miss you so much."
A soft knock makes me and Mother jump. The door opens slightly, a head poking out. It's Xavier Auburn. When his eyes catch sight of us, he walks in, pulling me away from my mother so he can hug me.
"Will you do one thing for your dear father?"
I nod, "Anything, Papa."
"Make me proud. And tell me you will bring me home another son soon?"
Unlike witches, the vampire culture has different thoughts about marriage. We like to get married at a young age so that we have our entire lives with our family that we've made. Just like my parents spent their lives bringing me and Noah up. Now Noah and I have to find our own family.
The witches don't agree. They think they should marry whenever they want to. If they want to succeed in education first, then so be it. If the girl is in her mid-thirties, doesn't matter. She'll easily find a suitable partner. But it gets a little tricky when two vampire parents give birth to a witch. That can happen. Seeing as our ancestors got married as a vampire and as a witch. Back when they didn't realise how dangerous it was. Back when they did not know the murderous consequences of giving birth to a hybrid.
I give him a smile. "Of course I will, Papa."
"Good." He embraces me again, this time inhaling my scent and then he has his teeth in my neck. And God, does it feel good. He pulls apart a second later, licking his bloody lips. "That was so that I have a clear memory of ma beau when you are of this age, leaving my family.
