Chapter 9

KADEN

I try to reassure her one last time that it will all be OK. She doesn't listen, she doesn't want to. She thinks I'm a failure; that I lost her the night it happened. The stormy night of which I bit her.

"Please, baby, just listen to me–"

"No," she interrupts. "Not anymore, Kaden. I won't."

She's beautiful, my little angel. She's nothing like Sierra, not a bit like her. I guess that's a good thing – it makes this whole thing a hell lot easier. Her dark hair is covering her jade-green eyes, and I tuck a strand behind her ear.

"I want to let you know that I'm so, so sorry for everything," I whisper, caressing her soft cheek with my thumb. "You don't know how much I'm sorry."

"I know you are," she responds, smiling up at me.

We met back in Year Six. In her family, there are six of them. Four boys, two girls – boy, boy, girl, boy, girl, boy – she's the second youngest. Her elder sister was together with my brother, John. And then left school when the accident happened; had rehabilitation stuck at home, believing that her boyfriend was trying to contact her, tell her he was alright; and then next thing I know she's marrying her human therapist.

"Then why can't we–"

She hushes me. "You know why, Kaden."

I place a feathery, light kiss on her lips. When we break apart, she gazes up at me with love and affection just like she used to. "I love you."

Sighing and smiling warmly, she places both her hands on the sides of my face and kisses me again. This time with passion and fire engulfs us, and when she tears away for a breath, the fire dies out. "I love you, too, Kaden Lowe. I always will. Just say the word and I'll be back in your arms, forever. "

I frown. "But I already have – millions of times!"

"That's where you're wrong," she grins.
