KADEN

She walks away, ignoring the flock of slimy boys trying to smother her, and I am left smiling for nothing. She's hot, for one thing. And a vicious hunter - Sierra's everything a vampire boy would want. Hell, probably for a witch too. She's way over your league, I tell myself. But you've got a way for the girls, too.

I grab my bags and pad towards my room. Apparently, I've ended up being the unlucky one. Seriously, who puts a first year with a third year? I don't get this shit. The door swings open, and I half expect my roommate to be there.

There he is, looking as handsome as the guy who could get any girl he wants, including Sierra Auburn. The guy is basically a male version of her - he's got everything. The looks, the fame, the wealth, the girls...screw him.

This is going to be so much fun.

He uncrosses his long legs, and puts out a hand for me to shake, beaming brightly. I shake it vigorously. "Hey, there, newbie," he says.

"Hi. So" - I look around the room, my eyes landing on the empty bed - "are you my roommate?"

He smiles. "The name's Cullen. Elias Cullen - third year and private mentor."

"Ah. That explains all the muscle."

"Hey, I'm just like this because I need to be. You're all the way, man."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Inside joke," he frowns, "thought you'd know. Don't you remember me?"

I narrow my eyes. "I don't remember you, no. And I suppose you think I do?"

He shakes his jet black hair, and when he meets my eyes, his fangs come down. "I witnessed John and the hybrid."

Fuck him. My brother, John, was killed by a hybrid, just on VWI's campus. When a hybrid had escaped and had been very, very hungry. I'd been thirteen when it happened. When I had to listen to the news that John Lowe was dead it was the worst thing I've ever had to go through. I lost him to this damned school. Just because a freaking teacher forgot to lock Cane Hill's dorms it cost my brother his life.

I still can't believe my parents sent me here and not to Ireland or Scotland, or somewhere abroad. I haven't even been at the school for a week, and the haunting has started.

And this Elias Cullen had been there to see my brother die.

"Don't dare say anything about my brother," I rasp. "You watched him die. So you're to blame as much as that hybrid."

He tut-tuts. "Oh, dear Mr Lowe, I couldn't do anything. You can't fight a hybrid and that's final. We both would've lost our lives. And plus, if I'm to blame, then why wasn't I burnt to the stake with the monster?"

I realise I don't want this fight. I tear away, and sigh. "I'm sorry. I - it just gets me pissed, you know? It's not the best thing to go through."

He touches my shoulder. "I know, man. I know. Trust me: he was a great guy. I didn't know him that well, but still. He was close with Noah, though. They were both in the same class."

I don't say anything. The place gives me the creeps. At only sixteen, my brother had been viciously slaughtered by a monster. Hell, I'm almost sixteen, and I'd - God, I don't even want to think about how it would go with another Lowe.

Unpacking all my essentials and sorting my books, takes longer than I think it did. Elias leaves about an hour later, mumbling something about having to see his training teacher. In a way, I'm not relieved that he's gone. At least it makes me feel secure. Now...I'm too sure.
