Dan was ready at 5.59 and waiting eagerly by his door, but Phil didn't show until 6.10 – late as usual. They didn't even wait for Phil to ring the bell before flinging the door open and throwing their arms around his waist, knocking him over to let both of them land in a laughing heap on Dan's front lawn.
"He's here!" Dan shouted, and they heard their mother saying goodbye before they closed the door, pulling Phil up to face them.
"Pronouns?" Phil asked, grinning, and Dan couldn't help but smile.
"I am your stunningly charming datemate today, Philip."
"Indeed you are. We've got a bit of a walk ahead of us, so you'd better be ready."
Dan took Phil's hand, happy to let Phil guide them along the pavement.
It was a grey twilight when they left the house, but by the time they reached what Phil referred to as the destination, it was a velvety black night. Dan was about to take out their phone to use as a torch, but Phil stopped them.
"You're going to want to keep your eyes adapted to the dark." He said, and Dan shrugged.
The two lay down on the blanket that Phil had brought, and looked up at the sky. Phil checked his watch and laughed under his breath.
"What?" Dan asked, and Phil simply looked upwards. Dan followed his gaze and gasped, following the shooting star as it sped towards the Earth and vanished. Then another shot across the sky, plummeting down once more. Then another, and another... the sky was filled with beautiful falling stars, overlapping each other and lighting up the sky with momentary bursts of brightness. Dan let out a long, slow breath and shuffled closer to Phil, putting their head on his shoulder and keeping their eyes trained on the sky above.
"I love you," Phil mumbled, and Dan snuggled closer into him.
"I love you too."
They stayed there for hours, watching the meteors streak across the sky.
