"Makes you nervous?" Garcia asked with a kind smile once we were successful,y away from both Nelson and Donavan. When meetings and trainings is over Garcia and I are the best of friends. In fact, we are first name basis friends.
"She sure does. Want to get a drink?" I asked as I walked with her outside of HQ.
"Sí." Garcia said. She was originally from New Mexico so I know she felt at home here.
"So what's with you and Nelson?" I asked her out of curiosity.
"Nothing." Garcia lied and I raised an eyebrow. "Fine, we kissed in a closet. Happy?"
"First of all, why on God's green earth would you want to kiss in a closet and why would you want to kiss Nelson?"
"If you haven't noticed, one there is practically no privacy anywhere and two there's no men, and three she's just down right sexy. I know you know what I'm talking about. Even though you hate her you can see it."
I shook my head at Garcia's logic. I know being in a town with zero men and a bunch of hormonal females doesn't help. Many are or are considering being gay just because there is no men around and we have the need of companionship. I along with several other women were still holding out for a cure for men. If only it would come sooner.
We reached the bar which is an old style tavern. Guitar music floated outside as we entered. There were several tables and chairs in the middle of the space. Along the right wall was a bar and along the left wall was a billiards tables and a jukebox.
"Well, hello ladies. Will it be the usual?" Miss Stephanie O'Malley asked. She had a distinct southern accent and dirty blonde hair. She stood at about 5'11" and was of average wait.
"Yeah, thanks Steph." I said as Garcia and I sat down at one of the tables. There were several other patrons sitting at the tables discussing life in general.
"Are you on patrol tomorrow?" Garcia asked leaning back in the wooden chair.
"No, I'm training tomorrow." I said absent-mindedly as Steph placed two beers at are table. She was lucky we could still supply her with alcohol or she would be out of business.
"Do you love Nelson?" I don't know why I asked Garcia this. It almost made me sick thinking that she might have some kind of love interest for Nelson.
"Of course not. I was drunk and not thinking straight. It isn't anything more. I swear." Garcia said holding her hands up in defense. I sighed and smiled.
"Good, she's just a prostitute anyway."
"Definitely." Garcia said and we broke out into laughter. Nelson would be furious if she heard us speaking negatively about her.
We talked for several hours as just friends about our lives in general. I think these kind of heart-to-heart conversations are important to keep ones sanity. All of a sudden several gunshots were heard and Garcia and I raced out the bar and towards the East gate where the noise was coming from.
"What's going on?" I called up to one of the guards.
"A male, ma'am. I think he's unconscious." I stood there stunned. What do we do?
Should I leave him out there to die?
"Open the gate!"
"Ma'am?" The guards looked at me puzzled and apparently nervous.
"Open the gate I tell you!" I listened as the metal screeched as it slowly opened and Garcia and I stepped toward the lying figure our guns raised.
"State your name and business." Garcia said sternly as if reprimanding a child, The male groaned and turned over.
"My name is Houston Loome and I just need a place to rest." He said hoarsely.
"Open your eyes." I said firmly. He opens them and I tried not to gasp. Males that were infected had red around their eyes instead of white. This man had white. I looked down and saw his right pants leg was soaked with blood.
"Garcia help me. He needs a doctor." I said helping him stand. He went unconscious again from the pain but Garcia and Inwlaked him inside the town. What had I done?
