I paced outside the door of the makeshift hospital. The building used to be a Hotel but had been converted into Dr. Joan Louis' domain. She was somewhere in her thirties with crinkles on her face and kind brown eyes and brunette hair that was always in a messy bun. Nelson stormed in about fifteen minutes ago demanding an explanation as to why I had let a male past the gate. She was intrigued that he was uninfected so she decided to wait with me and see when he wakes up.

I ran a hand through my hair my fingers tugging and pulling at the knots in it.

"You should brush your hair." Nelson said in the prissy voice of hers like she believed she own the world. I rolled my eyes at her.

"Gee, thanks, Einstein." I said sarcastically.

"Did you just give me attitude?" Nelson asked furious as she stood to her full height and was only inches away from me. I straightened my shoulders and looked her in the eye. As commanding officer she had the right to slap me as a discipline so I was expecting it at any moment.

"Yeah I did, so?"

"You should be grateful you little twerp."

"Grateful for what prostitute? That my commanding officer is a complete b**** and knows it. Yeah I'm REAL grateful." I taunted sarcastically. Her face turned a bright cherry red and she looked like she was planning on slapping me but it never came as the door opened and the doctor appeared.

"I'm sorry am I interrupting something?" The doctor asked sweetly. Nelson only stormed out of the building angrier then ever.

"No, everything is fine. What news of the patient?" I asked ignoring Nelson for now but I knew that she would seek her revenge eventually.

"He broke his leg which I have casted. He'll be in the cast for about two months maybe three depending on how much stress he puts on the wound." The doctor said coolly. Two months was a long time to keep a male in the community.

"Can I see him?" I asked and the doctor nodded stepping out of the way so I could walk in. Houston slept peacefully in the bed as if his life wasn't in danger. The lower part of his right leg was securely wrapped in a cast. With the light of the lamp I could see his tan skin and dark hair that ran along his chin. I think they call that a beard.

He groaned and coughed looking at me tiredly. "Water." He said hoarsely his throat dry from dehydration. I grabbed the water bottle from the side table and unscrewed the lid placing the water near his lips. He gulped the water down like a starving man. When he was finished he asked, "Where am I?"

My mind goes blank for a minute. What was I to tell him? He was in a town of only females not counting the children? That he was a dead man just being in the town? That he probably would be put in prison for eternity if Donavan let him live? I took a deep breath before answering.

"I can't tell you right now." I said calmly digging my fingernails into my palm to keep from thinking he was cute.

"Who are you?" He asked his voice sounding like honey to my ears.

"Agent Skye Burns."

"Agent, huh? Must be pretty important to have such a title."

I didnt think I was that important. We all had a job to do.

"Is Skye short for Skylar?"

"I suppose so."

"Domt you know?" I shook my head in the negative and he only raised an eyebrow. Did it matter that my name was short for something else?

"Do you burn up stuff a lot?"

"No, why do you ask?"

"I don't know. Your last name is Burns so I figured I would ask. Helps to know if I need a fire hydgrent ready." He chuckled lightly then frowned when I didn't laugh too.

"What, you don't get the joke?" I shook my head in the negative. "we'll never mind the . It's no use telling a joke and having to explain it after words." He seemed to be frustrated that I didn't get his joke.

"Whay are you talking to me like we know each other?" I asked bluntly. He shrugged and winced like it hurt.

"You shouldn't shrug if it hurts."

"Thanks, Miss Einstein. To answer your question, I was trying to get to know you. Figured with my leg and all I might be here awhile. But seeing as your not in the mood for talking, I'm going to bed. Night." He turned over and started to snore lightly. I walked out the room and the doctor was waiting for me.

"Well? What happened?"

"Nothing. Nothing at all."

After saying good night to the doctor I walked to the house I shared with four other girls. The home was Adobe style with a big common area and rooms for each individual. I walked up the steps to house number 8 and heard laughter drift outside from the open window. Stepping in, I saw my four roommates laughing and joking on the couch.

To the left was Faye. She had bright blue eyes and bright blonde hair. Her face looked sweet and innocent and her eyes dazzled with merriment. She was my younger sister. Next to her was Hope. She was Japanese, I think, with short dark brown reddish hair and almond eyes. She assured everyone that they could never pronounce her real name so she insisted everyone call her Hope.

Next to Hope was Julie Jackson or JJ as she nicknamed herself. She had a pixie like face with short blonde hair. She had a thing for black clothes. She said it made her look badass. I couldn't disagree. Lastly on the other end of the couch was Annie Donavall. She was sweet girl with long wavy brown hair. She just moved with us six months ago so I didn't know much about her.

Faye looked up at me and smiled, "Hey Skye." She said cheerfully.

"Hey everyone." I greeted back taking my boots off.

"I heard something happened at the east gate, is that true?" Hope asked turning towards me.

"Yes something did happen."

"What was it?" JJ demanded now turning to face me.

"Not a what a who." I corrected. This caused the girls to talk over each other trying to ask questions about what they figured was a male. Except Annie, she was very quiet watching the girls. Maybe too quiet. I ignored the, and started to head up the stairs. Just as I reached the top Faye appeared at the bottom.

"Skye, are we safe?" She asked her blue eyes becoming as big as saucers. I sighed. I couldn't lie to my sister but I couldn't tell her the truth either so I settled for in between.

"I hope so, Faye. I really hope so."
