3:10 p.m. — Booker T. High School
Miami, Florida

The bell goes off loudly, signaling the end of Lani's first day at Booker T. Lani takes her time packing her notebook, pens, and Calculus book in her bag while everyone around her hurries out the classroom. She lazily stands up with her bag in hand and walks out the classroom door into the stuffed hallway.

With her head down and earpods in her ears, she navigates her way out the school building.  She avoids walking right into a girl who is too busy running her mouth to pay attention to where she's walking. Just as she makes it to the security near the exit she remembers that she has to stop by the guidance counselor to talk about her first day.

Lani turns on her heels and searches the thinning hallway for the room. After a few minutes of searching Lani becomes irritated. After reaching a dead end, Lani rolls her eyes and decides to forget it and go outside to wait for her mom.

Turning around Lani runs right into someone.

"Aye my bad." The boy says, looking down at her.

Lani tilts her head back to fully look at him. He has light skin that matches hers, dark brown eyes, and an oval birth mark on his right cheek. Thick coarse hair rests on top of his head, pieces here and there twisted together.

"It's okay..." Lani trails off lowly. She's more on the shy side and is slight socially awkward. She's not good at making conversation with people that she doesn't know.

The boy continues to peer down on Lani making her nervous. Lani stands at 5'6", making her on the taller side for girls. Almost everyone that Lani knows is around the same height as her or shorter; her dad is only a couple inches taller than her at 5'9". Since Lani's father is pretty short and she went to an all girls school previously, she's not used to being around such tall guys and it's intimating to her.

Shifting on her feet, she debates whether or not she should wait for then boy to leave or if she should first. She knows her mom isn't here yet because her mom constantly runs on CP time but she'd rather be outside than stuck in this awkward starring match.

"You lost or some? I can take you where you needa be." The boy offers. He noticed Lani wandering around the school and he intentionally bumped into her.

Lani peeks up at him and nods. "Yes, please. I'm looking for the guidance counselor." She speaks lowly. Since Lani spent a majority of her life in England, she has a very strong accent. Earlier in the day, she was asked to introduce herself to the class and when she did, some of the students mocked her accent. Ever since that, she has been trying to speak as little as possible to avoid it happening again.

"I gotchu, follow me." The boy starts to lead them in the opposite direction to the other side of the school where the main office is. "You was all the way in the wrong place," he laughs.
