Chapter Eighteen

Jay

I knew from Jess's face she was upset. I know she wanted to spend my birthday with me but I coudn't. Christine works for Harvard University.

That night I left Jess alone I was speaking to Christine about a job offer. She offered me a position at Harvard. I was so excited, I mean Harvard, thats a great school. But I couldn't tell Jess.

Harvard is in Massachusetts. Almost four hours away from New York. Almost four hours away from Jess. I tried my best to ignore her. She texted me but I just turned off my phone. Christine came to visit me and talk to me about. She needed an answer.

I didn't know what to tell her. I didn't want to leave Jess but this was a great opportunity. I invited Christine back to my apartment to talk it over. We were sitting for a while talking.

"Jay your gonna love it over there. Just say yes" she said.
"I don't know. This is a tuff decision." I said.
"Its that girl holding you back right? Whats her name Jenn? Jess? She's your student right?" She said.

"Its not what it seems" i said trying to dismiss the topic.
"Listen I don't judge. Teacher student relationship, I've had my fair share but don't let her cloud your judgement." She said.

Someone knocked on the door and went to open it. It was Jess. She stormed in clearly upset. "Why have you been ignoring me all day? I've been texting you and every time you saw me you just pushed me away. Did I do something wrong?" She got quiet when she noticed Christine.

"Oh so this is what you've been doing?" She said.
"Its not even like that Jess" i said before she stormed out. I sighed in frustration.

"Christine do you mind leaving? I'll call you and give you an answer by tomorrow" I said.

"Think wisely my friend" she said before leaving.

Jess

I was in my apartment furious. Something was going on with Jay and that girl Christine. I'd just went to knock on his door to question him about avoiding me and who's sitting on his couch? Her. I was angry.

I was making a cup of coffee when someone knocked my door. I opened it and it was Jay. I was about to close the door on him but he stopped it.

"Jess can we talk about this" he said.
"Whats going on with you and that girl? I mean you ignored me the whole day for her so obviously something is happening" I said furious.

"Christine and I aren't doing anything. She just came to talk to me. We had some things to discuss."

"What things?" I asked.
"Christine offered me a job at Harvard University" he said.

I didn't know what to say. Harvard? Harvard was in Massachusetts. That was far.

"What did you say to her ?" i asked.
"I didn't give her an answer yet. She said by tomorrow" he said.
"Have you made up your mind?" i asked.
"Jess I don't want to leave you" he said.

That made my heart stop. I had a little faith that he would stay.

"But this is a great opportunity for me" he continued. That little bit of hope completely disappeared. Tears started falling from my eyes before I even knew it. I turned my face and wiped my tears & he pulled me into a hug.

"Please don't leave me" I said into his chest. "I don't want to leave you but-"

"But thats more important. I totally get it" I said pulling away.
"Jess you know I love you right?"
"I know" I said wiping my eyes.
"We can talk over the phone, I'll visit whenever I can" he said.

"No" I said quietly.
"Huh?" He asked confused.
"If you leave we can't be together. Its not gonna work out" I said.
"How do you know that? We didn't even try"  he said trying to hold my hand.

"I know how important your job is to you. Trust me I know. That's why you need to go. I love you but I'll be fine" I said giving him a weak smile.

He hugged me and more tears came.
