The earliest mention of French toast is in a collection of Latin recipes called the Apicius from the 4th or 5th century, there it mentions soaking bread in milk and egg then frying. In 15th century England, under the rule of Henry V , a version of French toast called "pain perdu" or lost bread was extremely popular, it was called lost bread because stale or hard bread was always used. One theory of who invented French toast relates to an innkeeper in Albany New York called Joseph French, he created the dish in 1724, advertising it as French toast but he forgot to put the apostrophe.
