2000:

I was sitting on the couch with my Mom. She stroked my hair lovingly, and I smiled. She looked at the remote and whisked it off the coffee table. As she flipped through the channels, I got up, and walked over to my toy box. I pulled out a stuffed animal I called "sushi," after my favorite food. I squeezed it and sat down, throwing it in the air, and crawling on the carpet to get it.

I heard a car door slam, and my Mom shot up. She turned off the TV, and ran to the kitchen. She sloshed her hands in a pot full of water in the sink, and patted some flour on her cheek and apron. Then the door opened, and a shadowy figure appeared in the doorway. I ran to me and my sisters' room. They sat there, doing homework.

"Is Dad home?" Ana asked, fiddling with her pencil. Then we heard a scream, and it wasn't just any scream...it was my Mom's scream. I hid under our bunk beds, and cried, squeezing my sushi toy.

"Stay. Here," Emily said, pointing at me. She grabbed a bat and put her hand on the knob. "Both of you."

"But I-" Ana tried to say, but Emily's glare cut her off.

She left, and Ana locked the door after her. She ran to me and pulled me from under the bed. She opened the window and looked outside.

"That's not Dad's car..." she said, eyes widening as she took it in. "Blue car, license plate PS32K...J! That's that...that...psycho killer's car!" She leaned out the window and I heard her gasp. I dropped sushi and ran to the window. I saw a dead body in the driveway.

It was my Dad. Emily burst through the door, there were cuts on her arms and face. She was sweating like a pig.

"Out the window. Now," she commanded us. I grabbed my sushi and took Ana's hand.

"What about money?" Ana asked. She looked at Emily's hand. It had a wad of money, and a wallet.

With that, we left.
