I love my best friend

There were three of us at the dinner. Shawna, Charlie, and I, James. Shawna and Charlie sat on one side of the booth kissing and whispering to each other while I sat on the other side and tried not to puke. I stared at my menu, trying to distract myself. "What are you guys ordering?" I asked. After a few minutes with no reply, I banged my hand on the table. "Hello?" Still no answer. "Shawna! Charlie!" I rolled my eyes at them. "You do know that I'm here, right?"

Shawna giggled and glanced at me. "Oh, yeah. Hey, James." She mumbled. "We're sharing a milkshake." Then she went back to kissing Charlie.

I sighed and stared at the menu again. I wasn't actually reading it. I was holding it up only so I couldn't see the two love birds across from me.

Finally a waitress came by and asked us what we wanted. I ordered coffee for myself and Charlie asked for a milkshake for him and Shawna. The waitress nodded and left.

Shawna and Charlie started making out again. This time, I had no menu and had to turn my head around. I mentally grossed out.

The waitress came back a few minutes later and gave us the coffee and milkshake. Shawna and Charlie slurped their drink and it got on my nerves. I quietly sipped my coffee and frowned.

"Charlie, did you see the baseball game last night? I asked, trying to make conversation. He ignored me. "Shawna, how's your dog?" I asked. No one said a word to me. I set my coffee down and got up from the table. "Screw this! I'm leaving!" I started walking away but then turned around and yelled, "And you can pay for my coffee too!"

Things have always been like that. Shawna Roberts has been my best friend ever since preschool. But when we started high school, that was when I realized I loved her. I've never said it to her. I've only told my one other friend, Cale. I regret that. A lot. Because about two weeks into freshman year, Shawna told me she liked this one guy names Alex. They dated for a few months. Then she moved in to Josh. Then Damian. Sophomore year she dated Gabe, Nick, and Charlie. They've been together ever since. All through the rest of sophomore year, all through junior year, and into senior year. It's only a week into the school year though. Maybe this'll be the year I tell her. If only I can break her and Charlie up.
