Shawna was absent from school for the next week. She had me tell everyone she was sick, when really she was scared.
Mike tried talking to me several times about Shawna. He didn't bring up what happened, he just asked if she was alright. Finally, my anger towards him boiled over one friday afternoon.
"James." I heard Mike's voice call after me.
It was the end f the day and I thought I could get home without any trouble. Nope.
"What do you want?" I snapped. I really wasn't in the mood. First of all, I was having a terrible day. Second, I was deathly worried about poor Shawna. And third, the guy was a jerk and I hated him for what he did to her.
Mike looked a mixture of nervous and anxious. "How is she?"
"She has a name, dipwad." I grumbled and continued walking.
He cleared his throat and followed me. "James, please, is Shawna alright?"
I stopped dead in my tracks, spun around, and faced Mike. He was a good foot taller than me and probably 100 pounds heavier then I but I had to stand up to him for Shawna's sake.
"Listen," I said with anger. "I know exactly what you did to Shawna the other night. She came right to me and told me. And you know what? It was completly wrong of you to do that. You discust me. Shawna is my best friend and I hate seeing her hurt, so thus, I hate you. Leave me and leave Shawna alone, OK, M-"
Slap!
Mike slapped me across the face. He bent down to my level and spoke quietly in my face. "You don't say one word to anyone about what happened." He popped his knuckles and made me cringe. "Or else your dead." Mike added. "Not a word."
I nodded nervously and walked away as fast as I could.
When I got home, I was dying. I paced around my room feeling scared.
A few minutes after I got home, the door bell rang and I nearly pissed my pants. I ran downstairs and saw Shawna through the window.
I opened the door and let out a deep breath. "Thank god your here!" I exclaimed as I hugged her.
"What's wrong?" Shawna asked immediately. "I was sitting at home and suddenly got a terrible feeling in the bottom of my stomach. What's going on? Is everything alright?"
I shook my head and paced around the room somemore. I had no clue why I was so scared. If I didn't say anything to anyone, I'd be fine. But I have a big mouth and can't keep a secret so I think I'm screwed.
I explained to Shawna what happened and what Mike said.
She didn't seem worried at all. "Just don't say anything to anyone then, James. It's that simple."
"You don't understand, Shawna!" I exclaimed. "Why do you have to be so stupid sometimes?!"
"I'm the stupid one?!" She yelled back. "Yeah, I'm the one who's scared to death because I was told to keep a secret. That's why I'm stupid."
I hung my head. "No, your stupid becuase your not scared. You're just sitting there looking pretty and not caring about anyone but yourself. You don't understand how big of a deal this all is. You were nearly raped and you're just brushing it off like it happens all the time."
"Well excuse me for trying to ignore the pain." Shawna shouted at me. "Your supposed to be my best friend, James. I didn't want you to say anything to anyone, not even Mike, and you can't even do that."
I pointed to the door. "Get out, Shawna." I said sternly. "Now."
Shawna looked up at me with tears falling from her eyes. "W-what?"
"You heard me." I spoke louder. "Get out."
Shawna started walking out of my house. "You know what?" She paused. "Your a jerk. I never want to talk to you again."
"Good!" I screamed at her as she left.
I fell onto the couch and just laid there for what seemed like forever.
What did I just do? I thought to myself over and over.
