When I got home later that day, I slammed the door, threw my keys in the basket, and plopped my backpack down on the dinning room table with a THUD. Mom came around the corner and crossed her arms. "James, what's your need to be so loud?"
"I'm mad." I replied flatly.
Mom sat down and looked at me with her caring eye. "What's wrong?"
I sighed. "Love troubles."
"Tell me more." She said.
I took a deep breath then let it out. "I love my best friend."
Mom jumped up and stared at me. "James, you love your best friend, Cale?! Oh my god, your gay!" She hugged me. "Why didn't you tell me before?!"
"Um, because I'm not gay." I answered. "I love Shawna."
Mom sat down again. "Oh, sorry. You don't really talk about her much anymore so I just assumed... I'm sorry."
"It's fine." I laughed.
"So why do you say you love Shawna?" Mom asked.
I was quiet for a moment. "She's just... amazing... I can't really put it into words... But she has a boyfriend and I'm stuck in the friend zone forever."
Mom smiled at me. "Son, just tell her how you feel."
"But Charlie will beat me up!" I yelled.
She gave me a confused look.
"Shawna's boyfriend." I informed.
"Oh, well, just let things run it's course. If you and Shawna are meant to be, then it'll eventually happen. If you aren't, then I'm sorry." Mom stood up. "I have to do dishes. We'll talk more later if you want. I hope that helped, James."
I nodded. "Thanks mom."
I knew just what I had to do. I had to spend bonding time with Shawna like we used to. I had to make her want me and not Charlie. I had to show my best side. Maybe even make her a little jealous. This was going to be hard, but it would be worth the risk.
