The next day, Lucas was going to confront Maya about what had happened last night, something must have scared her for her to be like that.
When he arrived at school, he couldn't see Maya anywhere. He went over to Riley, who was leaning against her locker.
"Hey Riley, have you seen Maya?"
She shook her head, "Actually, no I haven't. I'm worried though, she hasn't answered any of my calls."
Something was seriously wrong with Maya and Lucas had a feeling it had to do with what had happened last night. Lucas gave Riley a sad smile before he sighed and walked to his locker. He just hoped that Maya was okay. He grabbed his books for history and made his way to Mr Matthews' classroom.
I sit in my usual seat, behind Maya, when she is actually here.
"Okay class, today we're going to be talking about the Vikings."Suddenly, a familiar blonde comes rushing into class. "I'm sorry I'm late, slept in."
Maya looked like shit, it looked like she hadn't slept at all even though she just said she did.
Mr Matthews smiled, "Have a seat Maya." She smiled at him and took a seat in front of Lucas.
"So, can anyone tell me what the Vikings did at funerals?" No one put their hand up, "Maya?"
Maya looked up, "Huh? Oh, the Vikings used to burn the bodies on a long ship with their belongs. For example, if a warrior died, they would burn the body with their best weapon or armour. They used to say a pray before they lit the ship, but that all changed once they became Christians." Everyone looked at Maya, shocked.
She shrugged, "What? I pay attention in class."
Mr Matthews was the only one who didn't look shocked, he just smiled. "That's correct, Maya."

At lunchtime, Riley, Lucas and Maya was sitting at the cafeteria. Maya wasn't talking to Lucas, it was just awkward silence. Riley finally broke the silence.
"So, we have a new guy coming here."
"Great." Maya groaned.
Riley shot her a glare, "Anyway, he's name's Farkle and apparently he's really smart. Maybe he could hang out with us?"
Maya looked at Riley, "Seriously?!!" Maya missed when it was just her and Riley, she wanted that back.
Riley nodded and smiled, "Yup."
"Argh!" Maya stood up and walked over to the trash can, putting her food in the bin.
For the rest of the day, Maya avoided Lucas. It wasn't that hard as they only had a few classes together. Maya didn't want to talk Lucas because of what happened last night, she didn't want to confess to him that she was scared. She was scared of whoever was targeting her, she was scared for her family and friends she didn't want anyone else getting hurt.
She knew Riley and Lucas cared about her and that they mean well, but she couldn't talk to them about this. If she told them, then she'd have to tell them what happened and she didn't want to do that; she didn't want to see the disappointment in Riley's eyes. She has already disappointed too many people in her life, she didn't want Riley to be one of them.
Lucas had no idea what was going on, he didn't know what happened to Maya last night but whatever did happen it had affected her bad. He wanted to help her but she wouldn't let him, he wanted to comfort her and tell her everything is okay but he can't do that if she kept avoiding him. Lucas had no idea what he could to do to show Maya that he was there for her, that he wanted to help her, she can't shut him out anymore. He was going to find out what happened one way or another.
Riley, well she was just confused. She didn't know what has gotten into Maya but she didn't like it. She didn't like the way Maya was acting, she was acting like she didn't care about anything. She missed the old Maya, the caring, sarcastic, rebel Maya. Sure, she may not have showed it but Maya actually had a good heart she just didn't like to show it.
School had finally finished and Maya was making her way out of John Quincy Adams Middle School but that all changed when she got pulled into the janitor's closet.
"Hey!" Maya yelled.
"This was the only way to get you to talk to me." When Maya faced the person she realised it was Lucas.
"Lucas, now isn't the time." She sighed.
"Then when is a good time, Maya?!! Next month, next year?!!"
Maya grabbed his shirt and pulled him closer so they were nose to nose. "What are you indicating Huckleberry? You know nothing about me."
"But I care you, Maya."
"How can you go from teasing me to caring about me within twenty four hours?!"
Lucas sighed, "Don't you see Maya? Me teasing you was showing you that I cared. Did I ever once bully you? Did I ever once hurt your feelings?"
He was right, "N-no." For once, Maya was stunned.
Did he really care about her this whole time? That can't be right, why would he care for her? It was Lucas Friar after all and she was Maya... Why would someone so popular care about someone so down-classed like Maya?
She pushed Lucas away, "You don't care about me, no one does." She pushed past him and opened the door.
Suddenly, her phone beeped. Oh no.
Unknown: Maya, are you doing this on purpose? Pushing everyone you care about away so I can't get to them? Well, sorry honey, but you're too late. Maybe you should quit while you're ahead.
Tears started forming in Maya's eyes, she couldn't take this anymore. She couldn't live like this anymore, her life was useless, no one cares about her and she certainly didn't deserve to live anymore, not after what she had done. Her life was just ruined and Maya knew what she had to do.
What has my life become?
