Chapter 6: The Ceremony

We lined up boy, girl, boy, girl, and so on. I was at the very end of the line, where as my siblings were closer to the front. Sydney was in the first five and Alex was in the middle, out of all us there was eighteen in total.

The ceremony room was rather weird there was a large pool in the corner of the room, it did not emit even the smallest wisp of chlorine, in fact it smelled like sea water. There were wooden bleachers which held crowds of people young and old, waiting to see if their children becomes one of the special rare shifters.

The first was a boy and though lanky stood confident and showed little to no fear, they announced his name as 'Declan Brown'. The golden gel was put on his face with two vertical lines on both cheeks and than one large horizontal line going down the middle of his face, following the line of his nose.

A glow began to emanate from the lines on his face until it began to expand to cover his whole body. When the glow began to look like it was about to burst he ran and dived into the pool, the water glowed a bright golden yellow. When the water turned back to normal what surfaced was no longer the boy, but a white kelpie.

It neighed loudly causing some to laugh, when he turned back and accepted the towel he was offered, the water creatures section cheered at their new member but quickly settled down when the next person stepped up.

It was a small girl with a frail body and long black hair, her name was Rosie Frost. She accepted the markings with a giant smile and when she was completely covered in the glow it began to spin furiously until it burst and there in her place flying was a black Raven. It flew around the room once before shifting back into the girl, the bird section roared with joy of their new member, not only that but a member of the feline section ran out and embraced her. He furiously kissed her until the headmaster cleared his throat causing them to separate, the girl's cheeks flushed a deep red as she realized how much of the crowd was looking at her.

The whole room burst into cheers at the mates finding their destined pair, a male came up next, his name was Charles Star and surprisingly his golden light seemed to push him onto all fours and when it was gone a red fox remained. As soon as he returned to normal, the boy that was first ran and embraced him. They kissed quickly and then ducked their heads both their faces flushed, the crowd laughed but no one teased or booed them for being gay.

It was in the simplest forms your destined mate and if that's what the goddesses intended they could do nothing about it because if they did, it would anger the goddesses, almost as if doubting their judgment.

Sydney was up next her blonde hair shining like gold and her eyes twinkling like diamonds, she bravely walked up the stairs and stood firmly though I could see the slight tremble in her hands. She got the gel put on with a brave face and when it began to glow she started to run towards the water, I held my breath waiting for her to come up.

The water instead of turning a golden color again turned into a bright silver color, there were many gasps at the sight of the light. When she came up it was astonishing, she was a mermaid, with a yellow, turquoise, and orange tail. She was beautiful and it suited her, this time when she changed back the water creatures and the bleacher people all roared in celebration.

When they quieted down I could see Sydney was upset she didn't have a mate run up and embrace her, she kept quiet about it but I could see her eyes shining a bit from here. A rather handsome boy was next and he shifted into a Cheetah, his mate was from the bird section and they embraced each other.

Next was a rather tall girl who held herself proudly and when she shifted it wasn't a surprise, she shifted into a siren, drawing in a lot of the unmated males into her spell with her voice. A male was right after and he became a vulture. Then there was a girl who turned into a Pegasus.

Finally, there was Alex, you see the crowds' attention increase when they heard the same last name as the one who shifted into a rare shifter type. It shoved him down on all fours and with this one you see a fox-like figure, it hadn't turned silver yet so everyone thought it was a normal red fox that was until at the last second the golden light burst into a silver colour and there on four legs in the place of my brother was an Arctic Fox. The Canine shifters and the crowd roared in approval, I could see my adoptive parents and the headmaster keeps sending glances my way, probably wondering if I was to be a rare shifter as well.

A girl was up next, she was rather tiny and when she turned into a hyena the crowd wasn't too surprised, up next was a rather tall boy and he was rather buff. He shifted into a wolf and after that he had a mate who was the girl that shifted after him, she was a Snow Leopard.

They embraced then quickly rushed off the stage as the next one was a male and when the gel finished covering him it expanded. Getting larger and larger as the minutes past, finally he shifted into a ginormous red dragon.

It sniffed the air and then let out a terrifying roar when it's eyes locked onto something and narrowed into slits. It was Sydney and a boy from the water creature section, the boy was flirting with her and she was trying to get him to go away. But he obviously didn't realize that and the beast stormed over their causing some of the water creatures to shift and dive into the water, others cowered away.

The boy had just realized he was the beasts' target and he cowered into Sydney. This made the beast even more mad and it released flames towards him, at the last second the boy grabbed Sydney and put her in front of him. The crowd gasped and looked at the boy astonished he could do such a thing.

The thing was when the flames hit her they either went around her or disappeared all together, evaporating into thin air. "Mate" was uttered by Sydney as she stared up at the dragon, the dragon shifted back and after punching the boy in the face, went and checked Sydney over for any damage. She laughed as he whispered something into her ear, the boy who pushed Sydney in front of himself towards the flames was thankfully removed from the room by two teachers because it looked like Sydney's mate was ready to give punching him another shot when he seen he had come back to the world of being conscious.
