I Want Answers

The black emptiness came and went, and I soon found myself in a dark woods.  Trees surrounded me on every side and the sky was lacking a moon or stars.  The scenery was so vivid and real, leaving only the too-empty sky a sign of this being a dream.  Footsteps sounded beside me and I knew it was him before turning around.

“You need to give me some answers,” I said with my eyes resting on a tree behind him.  If I kept my eyes on a certain point, it was easier to resist his.

I heard the smile in his voice as he spoke, “You’re back already?  Did you not have enough fun last time?  I’m sure I can take care of that.”

“Stay where you are,” I said with a tone full of disgust.  I focused on my disgust and anger, pushing the hunger to the back of my mind.  “You have been in my dreams for two weeks now.  But you don’t only just show up in them, you can control me.  I want to know who you are and what you are doing in my dreams.”

“It’s only a coincidence,” he mocked with a smirk.  The way he said it sounded just like my mother had said it only days ago.  There was no way he could have known that, unless…

“How did you know my mother said that?  How did yo—”

The boy moved with inhuman speed towards me and covered my mouth before I could finish speaking.  “I don’t see why you can’t just have fun.  Why do you have to spoil it and ask all these questions?  The more questions you ask, the more trouble you cause for me.  And the more trouble you cause, the more I’ll have to punish you.”  The dark chuckle at the end of his threat, caused my heart to constrict.  I now wondered if pain I felt here would carry over to reality.  If he killed me, would I really be dead?  “You think too much and I don’t like it.  I think I’ll just have to punish you.”

I swung my arm back and then towards his face, punching his straight in the jaw.  Without looking back, I ran through the woods.  Every turn I took looked the same; the trees barricading me from freedom and safety.  Tears ran down my face as I stumbled my way farther into the woods.

Suddenly the trees around me disappeared and in their place, stood only an ongoing stretch of darkness.  A hand wrapped from behind me and held me tight.  “I really wouldn’t try that again if I were you.”  The hand spun me around and I now faced the boy, my eyes meeting his.  I felt my control slip out of my hands like sand.  Closing my eyes, I tried to force myself to wake up.  “I won’t let you get away with what you just did love.”  I curled my hands into fists and squeezed me eyes so hard it hurt, trying to gain enough strength to wake up.  With a sharp intake of breath, I felt the dream fading and myself awakening.

My eyes shot open and I stared up at the ceiling.  The ceiling was painted a light blue with fluffy white clouds.  Everything about it had been comforting and normal, but now it reminded me only of the dark skies in my dreams.  This was officially more than just a dream; someone was controlling my dreams.  I couldn’t go back to sleep, not until I was more prepared.

Wide awake now, I moved to the desk chair in front of my computer.  I typed “someone is controlling my dreams” into the search bar and begin to search through the different links.  I went through seven links, none of which helped.  Rewording my search to “Supernatural thing that moves with a blink or an eye and can control dreams,” I began my search again.  The first two sites were about angels who could move fast and control dreams.  The boy in my dream was too dark and creepy to be an angel, but perhaps he wasn’t human after all.  My eyes continued to rake across the screen and came to a linked phrase, “Demons controlling dreams.”  Biting my lip in nervousness, I clicked the link.
