It seemed as if our eyes were locked on each others and I couldn't breathe. Why couldn't I breathe?
A new feeling awoke in my chest and an irresistible urge -no need- to be with Brian overtook me and I ran for the door.
For Brian.
I was just reaching for the door handle -how had I moved so fast?- when two strong arms yanked me back.
"Let go!! I have to see him! I have to!" I screamed, kicking out at the person holding me captive. My foot connected with a knee and I heard a groan, but the person didn't let go.
I let out a scream of frustration and had an angry hot flash. Suddenly, the person holding me let out a yell and dropped me. I fell on my knees and turned to look at Zach who was cradling his arm.
He looked at me in shock. "You burned me."
My eyes widened, but I said nothing as I got back up and once again went for the door.
"Katie, wait!" Zach called.
"Let her go. You can't stop her. It's the bond. Just let her get this over with." Liam.
I didn't even register their conversation as I bolted back the way I had come and out the front door.
I ignored the stares and whispers as I slowed my speed, staring at Brian who had once again began struggling with the two men.
I walked toward them, my heart pounding in my throat, my breath coming in short gasps. Brian.
Brian was right there. After what seemed like forever, he was right there.
One of the guys holding him back suddenly pulled his fist back and rammed it into Brian's jaw.
"Hey, stop!" I screamed in terror as Brian's eyes glowed yellow and he growled at the two guys. My eyes widened some, but I took another step forward.
"Stop!" I yelled once more as the guy punched him again, this time busting his lip open. They payed no attention to me.
The man went to slam his fist into Brian's bloody face another time and I felt myself snap.
I had no control of my anger.
"I said STOP!" I screamed, my hand shooting forward. The man about to punch Brian flew off his feet and slammed into a tree several feet behind him with a sickening crunch. He slid down unmoving.
Everyone went deathly silent and all eyes were on me. I turned my gaze past Brian's wide-eyed stare to the man still holding him.
"Are we going to have problems too, or are you going to let him go? Now." My voice was dark, full of promising threat.
"Y-your eyes. They're red," the man whispered, staring at me in terror.
"Let. Him. Go," I ordered. The man immediately released Brian and backed away. I glared at him the whole time.
"Katie." I turned my head forward and Brian was in front of me, dried blood on his face. I stared at him.
"Katie, I need you to calm down. I'm fine, okay? I stopped bleeding, see? It's dried. Just breathe. Calm. Down," Brian said in a soothing voice. I took a deep breath as Brian put his hands on my shoulders, breathing with me.
Suddenly, my anger melted away and I was aware of everything once again. The crowd around us was whispering as they watched with wide eyes. I looked around at them, shaking.
My eyes met Brian's again and I tried a shaky smile. I tried stepping into his arms. "Brian I missed you so-"
I cut off as he held me firmly back, his eyes hard as if blocking true emotions. "Katie, this doesn't change anything."
My heart stopped. "Wha-what?" My eyes begged Brian.
Brian kept his face stern, but I could feel his fingers shaking where he held me. "We still can't be together. I'm too dangerous. Much more so, now."
I stared at him, incredulous. "YOU'RE dangerous? Did you not see what I just did?!"
He didn't flinch at my raised tone. "There's so much you don't know-"
"Then tell me, Brian!" I yelled, shoving him back hard enough for him to stumble. "Tell me why you're so God damn dangerous and I'm not."
Brian watched me carefully, with a patience that made me want to hit him.
"I-" Brian was cut off as Zach came running up beside me, twirling me to face him.
"Katie! Katie, are you okay?" He questioned, looking me over to make sure I was fine.
"I'm fine, Zach. Don't worry about it,"
I said, shrugging him off. He continued to stare at me with worried eyes.
Brian stared at Zach, his expression hard. "Who the hell are you?"
Zach barely glanced at Brian. "Zach. Katie I need you to tell me what happened in your perspective," Zach said, grabbing my arm. I looked at him confusedly. What?
"Don't. Touch. Her," Brian growled, walking forward. Zach looked at him and rose an eyebrow.
"Jealousy problems, wolfy? Relax, she's my-" Zach started, but Brian lifted him by the collar of his shirt.
"She's not your ANYTHING," he growled.
"He's my cousin, idiot," I sighed, crossing my arms. Brian glanced from me to Zach, eyebrows furrowed. "Cousin?"
Zach opened his mouth to probably say something smartassy, but we were cut off by a yell.
"Help! Help! He's not breathing!" A woman called. I turned and saw a gray-haired woman kneeling by the man I had thrown into the tree, her eyes wide.
"Oh my God," Zach breathed, and went racing over to where the woman was kneeling. I stared, frozen in place. No, no this couldn't be happening.
I could barely register Brian staring at me as I watched Zach pump the man's chest. Brian said something, then ran where they were. In fact, the whole crowd moved as one to the commotion.
A pack to its fallen pack mate.
I continued to stare even when I couldn't see anymore, my blood ice cold in my veins. I did that. I did that. No, no, no. Oh God, please no.
I killed him. I killed a man.
"We need a paramedic!" Someone yelled.
"He's still not breathing!"
"I can't find a pulse!"
"His head is bleeding!"
"Where's the witch?"
"Use magic!"
It was so loud. It was too overwhelming. I couldn't think. I can't think. I killed him. I killed that man.
"Did she kill him?"
My head pounded as all the voices ran together and my heartbeat seemed to bruise the inside of my skin.
I. Did. That.
I turned to the west side of the forest, the voices growing louder still.
I ran.
