Scene 1: cool with the whole... gay thing?. 6:12 pm. Tomlinson House. Santa Cruz, California.

"Louis!" My cousin Shane greets me with a grin laced with happiness when I arrive at the footsteps of my new home for a few months.

My entire family lives in Santa Cruz, California. We usually just come for a few weeks but my dad left us for good this year and my mom decided that some family time could do her, and I, some good.

I smile in response and hug my favorite person in the world back. He's always been there for me, my siblings and mother never really were, but my Aunt Alyssa and Shane had always understood what I am and how I should be treated/loved. They were a breath of fresh air every time I got to spend time with them.

"I've missed you so much." He says into my shoulder.

"I've missed you too. You don't understand how much my life sucks in Stockton." I respond. He really doesn't. Sometimes we'll talk on the phone briefly but that doesn't nearly cover the real stuff. And because this last year my mom and dad have been going through a lot of shit, we didn't have time to come up here and see the family.

I have a few friends back home, we're fairly unpopular but it's mainly the family stuff that's always haunted me. Niall, Liam, and Ty have always been amazing friends to me, well not so much Ty anymore, but Niall and Liam both leave for camp tomorrow so I'd be alone all summer if I stayed there anyway.

"Let's go somewhere and talk. We really need to talk." Shane responds.

"Not until you say hello to everyone in this house." My mom says, always bugging me to do unnecessary things.

We all rented a three story beach house for the summer. Shane has a house down in Capitola but my mom and his mom wanted to be together.

In all, it'll be me, my mom, my younger brother Jordan, he's thirteen, Shane, and my Aunt Alyssa. We would have my Uncle Matt here, but he and my aunt have been divorced for a while and it would just be ridiculous to have him stay here, although he's a very cool guy and the divorce was never messy, it's inappropriate.

I won't mind staying here with my horrid mom though because this house is huge. It's three stories tall with a kick ass game room/garage. There's a balcony and me and Shane have a room to ourselves. Jordan is going to sleep in this really tiny deck thing, but it's big enough for one. My aunt gets her own bedroom, and so does my mother.

We're all going to be fine.

"Fine." I reply to my mom, greeting my aunt sweetly. There are a few other people over, my great grandparents, second and third cousins, aunts I've barely ever heard of. It's always a bother to speak to people you're expected to be sweet to and love, when you really barely know them. They could be serial killers or pedophiles, but they're family, so, you know.

Shane and I walk around the house and find everyone, quickly saying hi and exchanging a few phony smiles.

When we're finished he guides me out of the house.

"Bye mom!" I yell. She doesn't respond, probably too busy flirting with one of her sister's husbands.

"Where are we going?" I ask him as we walk down the unique streets of Santa Cruz.
