Alexis' P.O.V.
"Oi, everybody up! We're ten minutes away from the flat, so let's get some lunch!" yelled Dad from the front. There were several mumbles of protest, but our empty stomachs overruled our jet lag.
David opened the sliding door and the five of us in the back crawled out. As I jumped onto the pavement, I stretched my arms up, and fixed my posture. I winced as I heard some of my bones click.
Blinking furiously, I tried to adjust my eyes to the light. I looked around at my surroundings; cigarrettes where littered everywhere, and there street was crowded with people and cars. There were a few hastily planted trees situated next to the curb, but there seemed to be more pay-and-display booths than foliage. I wrapped my arms around my torso and waited for Dad to put the reciept on show in the windscreen. I saw Matt clap his hands and rub them together, and we all began to move towards the shopping mall on the opposite side of the road.
Once we had crossed the pedestrian, we walked inside the warm, air conditioned consumer's prison and looked around for a foodcourt. It was so busy- I suspected the whole of Invercargill was stuffed inside. But mind you, that's not really saying much.
I walked over to one of those huge touch screen mall GPS thingys, and looked up "Dining". I quickly located a Subway- the only familiar food store- and we all began to walk in it's direction. I swear I heard one of the midget twins' stomach growl. But I couldn't really speak- I was barely managing to keep the ferocious noises to a minimum myself.
I looked around in awe as we made our way to Subway- the mall was so different to the ones back in Auckland. Everything was bigger, better, busier and somehow a whole lot more glamorous. People of more ethnicities than I knew existed walked past me, never taking a second glance. I was suddenly overwhelmed by the sheer size of everything. Luckily though we had made it to the sandwich store.
I was strangely comforted to see my usual ingredients were there. I ordered a footlong meatball and put a whole heap of vegetables on it (Hey, I was hungry!), and went to find a large metal table to wait at.
I ran my fingers through my wavy dark hair, trying to get the knots out without ripping at my skull. It was a challenging task, but I knew I could rise to the challenge. Three minutes and forty seven seconds later my hair was smooth and tangle-free. I grinned at myself, proud of my little accomplishment. I really needed a hobby.
I stood up and looked around, trying to find the people I was unlucky enough to share the same blood with, until I saw him. I noticed his dark blue eyes first, and then his not-quite-black-but-almost-there hair that swept across his forehead. He was smiling widely, probably laughing at something the younger girl beside him had said. They looked similar in complexion, and I guessed they were siblings. Her eyes however, were not attached to her supposed to brother, but on her phone. I cracked a grin when I saw her bang into a table.
And then his smiling, dark blue eyes connected with mine, and I swear I felt a little bit of dribble escape the corner of my mouth. I quickly averted my eyes, and indescretely wiped away the rouge saliva.
Somehow over the chaos of the foodcourt, I heard footsteps coming directly my way. Oh crap, I thought, I am going to make a fool of myself. The footsteps stopped and I tentatively looked up to see Blue Eyes standing in front of me. I pursed my lips to seal any potential spit-spillages, but he seemed to notice the action and laughed. Oh God, this boy can't get any cuter. But then he talked.
"Hi, my name's Ashton. Ashton Fletcher." he held out his hand. But it was too late for human interaction- I had heard his accent. I repeated it in my head a thousand times in a few seconds, devouring the mix of London and Irish. He must have gotten a bit worried by my reaction as his next question was, "Are you deaf?" as he pointed to his left ear. Oh, that glorious left ear- all the things he could do with it, like... hear...
