Chapter 9: Truth
How do I tell him? I thought to myself as I prepared another burger. How do I begin? Where do I begin?
Gaby threw her arm around my neck startling me to death. "We have three customers waiting for those burgers for over half an hour ago."
I blinked looking down at the burgers that I had. I sighed loudly as Gaby frowned. "What's wrong Janice? You seem way off than usual." She released me and leaned on the counter next to me as she waited for me to reply. She clapped her hands together as her eyes twinkled. "I got it, you got into a fight with your boyfriend."
I shook my head as I placed the burgers in the bag. Gaby grabbed them and walked towards the front as she called out the numbers to the customers whom belong to the burgers. It was almost time to close as I grabbed the towel to clean the counter.
"Don't worry, Janice," she said again startling me. "If this is your first fight trust me it will be over soon."
"It's not like that, Gaby," I began. "An old friend of mine returned from studying abroad and I haven't told him I have a…a boyfriend." I quickly lied to her.
"And you're afraid if he finds out he'll be jealous," Gaby assumed. I bit my bottom lip as Gaby said those words.
"Something like that," I said slowly.
"Well then just tell him the truth. The truth does hurt, but it's better than being lied to. Trust me you wouldn't want a web of lies hovering above you every time you see him." Gaby walked towards me as she helped me clean the counter.
"But I'm afraid of what he will think," I said absently. I stopped what I was doing and turned to look at Gaby. "I don't want him to get involved."
Gaby raised an eyebrow but said nothing. "Even so, the truth is way better."
I sighed heavy as I looked down feeling a heavy pound on my shoulders. Gaby placed a hand on right shoulder. "Go, I'll close up don't worry."
I looked up at her with honest eyes as she winked at me giving me a grin. I threw myself at her as I gave her a bear hug. "Thank you so much! I promise I will repay you."
I smiled up at her as I rushed out of the food court and into the locker rooms for the employees of the food court. Am going to tell him, I thought as I changed into my regular clothes. I grabbed my bag as I slammed the locker room shut as I ran towards the exit of the mall. I stopped dead as I stared at the person in front of me. Sonya.
She eyed me from head to toe as she gave me a cold expression. "You will never be at his level so don't get your hopes up." She smirked at me as came close to me. "Trust me you will never be good as me." She stopped a foot away as she placed her hand on top of my head. "You will always be-."
"Enough," Nate bluntly said. Nate was gripping onto Sonya's wrist as he pulled her hand away from my head. He had a dark expression on his face as glared at her."You're quick to judge her, but look at yourself. Coming here and nagging that you still want me."
When did Nate get here? I thought to myself surprised my his sudden entrance. He wrapped his left arm around my shoulder holding me tight.
Sonya frowned in disgust as she tore from Nate's grasp. She was fuming as she looked from Nate to me. Without a single word she turned her heels and left.
"Looks like I came here just in time," Nate said with ran his right hand through his hair. He sighed as looked down at me. "Sorry."
I blinked surprised, "why?" He chuckled once without humor.
