.... Pamela brushed her copper red bangs out her eyes and lit up a cigarette. She gestured the pack towards me and I took one but, wind down the window.
"Take the highway East to Neilson. Flat rate. Thirty dollars." I took note of how Pam told the cab driver what she wanted and didn't ask.
"So you're gonna ask John?" I asked filling the void and looking at my bogey before I sparked it.
She took the bait.
"Yeah. I figured why the hell not. I don't have any family plans." She looked out the window and I looked out mine.
I don't know why, but I felt bad.
"Besides if I let him chill with me I get dinner and money. Win-win for me."
She went forward laughing and grabbed my arm.
"Oh shit," I finally replied. (Where are these guys she keeps meeting from)
I didn't feel bad anymore, but more my self.
Pam was living a pretty excited lifestyle with an abundance of fashion, alcohol and boys. Even if it was with one particular boy mostly.
And I on the other hand, had at the very least my brother.
"Youu girls are not supposed to be smoking in here! One of you don't even have the window down ". The Indian cabbie nagged but his accent made his words funny and we laughed breaking our awkward silence.
"I don't have to take shit. Iii don't have to drive you!"
We stopped laughing.
"Wha'em to dis faggot?" Pam kissed her teeth and picked her pack up from the seat. "You want one?!"
"There." She flung it on him and he in turn kissed his teeth before he lit up too, while winding down his window.
"Friggin faggot!" Pam exclaimed.
I laughed to break the tension and complimented her tan cowboy boots that I'd never seen before.
Pamela and I had been friends since grade school and even though sometimes we went weeks without speaking to one another we had a flow that hardly changed.
I looked out my window again and took another drag, thinking about when we were closer.
Meanwhile my phone alarm went off again.
"What time is it anyway?" I heard the contents of a purse being shoved around.
Time was something that I didn't want to think about. I had a distinct feeling that would be one of the topics at dinner. "Con?"
"Oh" I looked at my phone "quarter after five"
"Isn't your dad going to kill you?" She finally wind down her window and flicked out the butt.
"You know it" I observed that I still had almost half a bogey. ( did I smoke too slow or her too fast)
"Just make sure you call me when he's done his ranting so you can intercept the schools message."
I didn't answer. I'd knew she'd probably be on the phone with Daniel.
Instead I told the cabbie,
"Make a left here, and then a right, first lights after Sheppard."
"And don't even bother making No noise 'bout da flat rate 'cause I'm still going East after this!!" Pamela's voice dripped with attitude.
I took in her small frame and wondered how a girl that tiny could be so damn threatening.
"Right here" I said turning to hug the closest female I had known for a long time and thanking her for the ride
"No problem girl. Here. Take this," she replied breaking some buds of marijuana off in my hand now through the cab window.
"You're gonna need it" Pam's grin went from ear to ear.
I stepped on the sidewalk and watched the yellow horse carriage drive away along with my magical night, staring until after it wasn't in sight anymore.
My pocket vibrated and without looking I knew it was my dad. I dug in my right pocket for some gum and my iPod, opting instead to play my music without putting in the head phones.
The cold winter evening air should probably have stung my cheeks but after the smokey cab felt cool and refreshing.
Connie stomped out her black converse and pushed the only key she owned amongst countless key chains and charms into the door and gave it a turn.
