We stood there looking into each other's eyes for what seemed like years. But the captain broke it off to soon and looked at Faith, gruffly saying "The passengers arrive on deck in an hour." He pivoted on his heel and walked off tossing the startling information "The Prince and the princess will also be joining us." over his shoulder.
"What?" Faith asked, but it was too late; Captain Turner had been gone for a total of five seconds. We looked at each other. The princess? And the Prince??? "Oh my," sighed Faith.
"What do we do now?" I asked her.
"We must prepare ourselves to greet the passengers as they come on board. We must dress in our uniforms."
"Uniforms?"
"Yes. Here." Faith opened the door to our closet-room and came back out with our 'uniforms'. They were light blue dresses that looked like they would go to our ankles. The neckline was sqaure-cut. Around all the seams was white piping. There was also a small white over skirt that would come down to our knees. We both quickly changed, and I looked at myself in the mirror. The dress fit perfectly, thank god.
I looked over at Faith who was struggling to make the dress fit. She was pinning in the sides to fit her slight frame. When she had finshed, we both looked at her handiwork and burst out laughing. It was good except for the fact the neckline of the dress now only reached up to the middle of her chest.
"Just wait here a moment, I have an idea!" I told her.
I ran into the closet-room and pulled out one of my spare dresses that I had been fixing. The underskirt was a white linen with a raised flower pattern. Unfortunately, the underskirt was too big for me so I had been taking it in. I quickly ripped out the stiches that I had carefully put in and cut out the excess material. I quickly hemmed the edges and then brought out the rectangle to Faith.
I kneeled down in front of her and sewed the material to the dress. When I stood up and stepped back, I was pleased with the outcome of the dress. The white material that I had sewn in just looked like it was the modesty lace some upper class women wore to cover their chests when the dress was cut too low.
I stepped away from Faith to show her what I'd done and she smiled.
"I look beautiful, Adella! Just like a lady! Thank you!" She exclaimed happily. "We must get goin' or we'll be late!"
"Oh my goodness, you're right! Run!" I quickly answered.
"No runnin' Adella. We're ladies. Gotta make a good impression for the captain and the first mate and all the rest of 'em!"
"Of course. But GO!"
We hurried out of the room, down the corridor, up the stairs and out onto the deck where everyone was being lined up by Gus. They were being lined up according to rank and station in he boat, and who was directly relating to the passengers. First was the captain, of course, followed by a gap, for the first mate, I was guessing. Then there was the doctor, and his assistant, a gap for two people, to which I blushed. Then there was the cook and all of his assistants and sous-chefs.Then there were an assortment of sailors and crew and scullery maids.
We went to our spots in the lineup, myself beside the doctor's assistant who sneered down at me, and Faith beside the cook who mumbled something like "Les femmes sont toujours en retard." As we finished straightening ourselves out, Gus walked by and said, "Nice of you to grace us with your presences!" and then winked which made me feel a lot better.
I looked down the line to where Captain Turner was adn saw that he was looking at me with an unfathomable expression in his eyes. When our eyes locked, he visibly shook himself and then literally stuck his nose in the air.
A fanfare sounded, giving us warning that the Prince and his sister had arrived. As the first footstep fell onto the deck we all sank down into low bows or curtseys. It seemed like we stayed like that forever until the footseps fell and a voice like an orchestra spoke.
"Captain Turner, it is with great pleasure I find myself here on your boat."
"The pleasure and honour is all mine, your highness." The captain replied.
"Please, Captain, meet my brother, the Prince." The orchestral voice said.
"Your Highness." The catain said simply.
"Captain." A voice like melted chocolate and caramel replied. "Please, rise."
"Prince Edward, I hope you have an enjoyable stay on our ship, and should you have any needs or wants, do not hesitate to ask myself or my first mate. The same for you, Princess. Now I shall indroduce you to our crew if you should wish."
"Of course." The heavenly voice replied, who I now assumed was the prine.
"First, Angus Jones, my first mate." Gus' name is ANGUS? I thought to myself. "Then the onboard Doctor, Octavius Hickson and his assistant, Lucias Elkins." What a pair of disgusting names! "Then our women's nurse, Adella Harrison, and her assistant Faith Williamson." I hadn't realised, but the Prince and Princess had been stopping to make polite conversation to each person they were introduced to. The prince touched my elbow and made me stand.
"Miss Harrison," said the Princess, "A pleasure to meet you." I bowed my head in agreement. "I have a feeling we with know each other quite well by tomorrow, as I don't do well with seasickness. But don't tell anyone!" I nodded my head. She smiled and moved on.
"Miss Harrison." Said the Prince and I melted. We made eye contact and I couldn't seem to break away. He didn't look away either. We stayed like that until we heard a cough from the captain. We both looked away quickly and the Prince moved on to Faith.
I loked over at the Captain and he was looking at the prince with... Jealousy?
