Jessica knew that it wasn't exactly the best hing for her to be having a man friend apart from her husband's knowledge, but she was loathe to give him up.
As she sat at the kitchen table, meticulously and mindlessly polishing the silverware, she thought about the fated day when she met him.
It had already been a month and a half since, but it seemed so much longer.
He had said to her his name was Kelly Bryce, and when she laughed at the name, because to her it was two first names, he looked at her curiously, wondering why she chuckled. He didn't seem to know what was so funny about it because he rather liked his name.
She saw the curious expression on his face, and stopped her laughter quickly, bringing seriousness into her features. "Oh, that's a lovely name," she said a little too fast, then just as quick changed the subject.
Soon they were both laughing again. When she looked at him, she felt the common mirth between them and realized he wasn't so bad looking and he didn't hunch over so much as she first thought. She suddenly had a picture in her head that made her blush and when she noticed he was saying something she instantly pushed it out of her mind, mentally slapping herself at the inconceivable thought.
They had sat there talking a bit more, when out of nowhere he asked for her number. She stared at him for a few moments, and he just stared back, blank expressions on both faces. She knew that he knew she was married, he had seen the ring on her finger for God's sake! He had even commented on it.
She slowly digested the new events and decided to give him a chance at friendship.
Ever since that day, whenever she could get away, which she discovered was more often than she initially thought, they would meet together.
Jessica turned her thoughts back to the present and realized it was already 11:00 am and she only had a half hour to get ready before they were supposed to have lunch.
'Shit! Shit! Shit!' she yelled at herself, frantically throwing the silverware back into the drawer, slamming it shut with a bang when she finally got the last damn spoon in its place.
She ran to her room and tried to pick out something nice, but everything seemed so ugly. It always did. Jessica was not the kind of person who had many friends, in fact, apart from Josh, Kelly was the only other person she hung out with.
So when she went shopping, there was no partner to tell her how she looked; both Josh and Kelly were adamantly afraid of shopping. Thus, she rarely bought anything nice or fashionable, and now she was fuming because she was putting on the same dress she had been wearing for two years now whenever she went somewhere decent.
Cursing the whole time, she hurriedly snaked the dress up her body, heaving at the places it was a bit tight at, and then running her fumbling fingers over the button holes.
When she had the dress on, she ran to the bathroom, swiftly deciding on a hairstyle while applying her makeup in record time. She put it half up and half down, curling the ends for good measure, then ran back to her room and chose a pair of red platforms that didn't look too dressy.
She looked at her watch. 'Holy mother of God! Did I time travel? It's already that late?' she screamed in her head.
Running again, granted more slowly because of the platforms, she grabbed her purse, cell phone and was looking around like a madwoman before realizing she had everything she needed. Dashing out to her car, she realized she had left the front door open, so she ran back and closed it muttering curses the whole way.
Her neighbors, the Reyes's, were out on their front porch talking and laughing when they saw her. They erupted into more laughter and called out, "Hey Señora! You late for something? Don't fall!"
