Riley and Maya had been sat in the same room watching the same crappy daytime T.V in complete and utter crappy silence for three days straight. Riley tried to insist that Maya didn't have to stay that King and she could go home. Maya didn't listen Maya would simply brush it off or change the subject. Not surprisingly though the only thing that a Riley would talk about it Maya getting some proper rest and visiting other people, that's why they sat in silence. Perhaps they had nothing to say, perhaps things where said in the silence. Either way Maya sat religiously by Riley's side. She had hundreds of phone calls that she ignored. She had thousands of text messages to be read, did she read any of them? No. Was she aware they where there? No. Her phone had been turned off for a while, so no one could reach her. Not even mr and Mrs Matthews.

If there was one thing Riley was sure of, she knew that she liked the blonde girl. She knew she liked her smile and her determined manner. She knew that before the accident they knew each other. That's when the bad memories came in. The vague ones with the door slams and the tears and the angry people. If those where her mommies with the worried people in the waiting room, she didn't want to know what happened. If there was one June's that Riley said or did, it was stare at the ring that Maya wore on her finger. She stared because there was a matching ring on her finger. She would hold the ring in her hand and feel happy when she did so. There was another vague memory of a bay window when she held the ring. Riley also noticed that Maya would stare at the ring on her finger when she thought Riley wasn't looking. She would whisper some words as well when she thought Riley was asleep. Riley didn't sleep much these days.

Eventually, Maya had to go and talk to the Matthews so a boy sat with her. The boy had a long fringe that swept over his face, and a t-shirt with some math expression on it. She liked it when he visited because he brought flowers that livened up her dull hospital room. They where mostly purple flowers and she figured that she must have liked purple before the accident. Maya would bring paintings and cushions and flowers and the cutest bunny night lights she had ever seen from home whenever she went back. Which wasn't often. She would bring a lot though and that made Riley happy. The boy didn't have a ring on his finger like Riley did so she presumed it was a her and Maya thing. The boys name was Farkle which he had told her many times but Riley found it hard to remember. It was hard for Riley to remember things so Maya wrote stuff on paper and stuck it around her room.  She made people wear name tags when they came in so Riley wouldn't have to ask what people's names where every time they visited. Farkle was wearing his today. It was stuck proudly on the right side of his jacket as he watched day-time T.V with her. Farkle wasn't easy to talk to like Maya was. Riley could tell Maya that's she was hungry or to change the channel or ask how her day went. Riley didn't say anything when Farkle came. He didn't seem to mind. She would listen endlessly to his tales of random nonsense and stories of what happened in history. She would laugh politely when he made a stupid joke and frown or pretend to be sad if something upset or worried him. The one thing she would remember about him is that he would kiss her on both cheeks when he left and then he would wave goodbye then bow and then leave the door wide open for Maya to walk through. Maya didn't often use the door. Riley's room was near a fire escape and Maya used that as her method of transportation to fast food stores and back. Riley hated the bland hospital food so Maya ventured every day to Riley's choice of restaurant to bring back the same things, a strawberry milkshake and fries. Riley liked the different bags Tahiti the food came in and was collecting small snippets of each bag for a collage that Maya was going to make.

On one very special day, Riley had a memory of somethings that had happened a long tim ago. One memory of Farkle's lips on hers in a long lingering kiss. Her lips tingled when she thought of it. Her heart would race. It saddened her to think that she would never feel that way again. Mostly because the doctors said that she might never get her memory back. Partly because the kiss was followed by a car ride and then an aeroplane and then a while different state. She remembered the tears and the hurt look on his face. She didn't want that for him. She didn't want that for anyone.
Her phone buzzed next to her. It buzzed over and over. Someone was trying to call her. Nervously, she picked up the phone and tapped the screen. One name flashed on the screen
Charlie.
